I also work at a teaching hospital. Just to try and make you feel

better, you CAN request " NO STUDENTS " and they have to abide by that.

(I made that request and I work alongside the residents and knew they

were quite capable- just my own preference).

Also, there MUST be an attending OB-GYN in the hospital- and that OB-

GYN MUST attend all births. Only the most experienced residents are

allowed to do deliveries/c-sections- and the ATTENDING OB GYN must be

there " helping " the resident and step in immediately for any reason.

I have 2 residents that I work with who have been residents for 3

years and I would thrust those two MUCH, MUCH more than I would a

third of the OB's on our staff. Once (it does happen occasionally), I

checked a patient who was dilated to 4, walked out to the desk and

told the resident that she was " still a 4 and had been since 7am, "

she put her call light on before I walked away from giving him an

update (2 minutes) and said she felt like she needed to have a bowel

movement. I went straight to her room and rechecked her and the

baby's head was crowning. I put her light back on, told ther

resident, he came running back as the secretary called the OB MD who

was in the On Call room in the back of L&D. Of course, the baby came

out within 1 minute. The resident performed beautifully and the baby

was perfectly healthy. The Mom had a few tears from her explosive

delivery, but all in all, everything was just fine.

Now, having said all of that...... I wouldn't be happy with the " go

to the ER " aspect of it at all. Whenever I had a problem, my RE's

nurse would call back every single time within 2 hours. I came to

find out that he only is in the office Mon thru Thurs 8a-12p. (what

hours!!).

If you have any doubt, concern, or if anything doesn't feel right at

all, you should change Dr's. Pregnancy should be one of the most

joyous times and it seems like you aren't having much fun.

I wish you the best!

:)
