Alternatives to the Glucose Tolerance Test

Hi ladies,

Quick question for you. I have my next OB visit on Thursday. I have

brought up the issue of the glucose test a couple of times, and my OB

said it would be OK to take. I plan to talk with him again about it

Thursday and explain why I can't take it. I'm a little worried,

however, about the alternatives to the test, as well. Can anyone tell

me more about the fasting test? Exactly how long do you have to fast?

Is it generally taken in the morning? I have had problems with low

blood sugar throughout my pregnancy (before I was pregnant, too, but

it's gotten worse since I became pregnant), and I have to eat a

little something pretty much all the time. I'm not sure that a

fasting test will work for me, either.

I just think that either way, I'm going to be screwed -- if I drink

the 50g of sugar, I will feel awful and probably have a low blood

sugar reaction after my blood sugar crashes. If I do the fasting

test, I will probably have a low blood sugar reaction, too. I

seriously doubt I have gestational diabetes -- my problem is the

opposite -- my blood sugar is too low. Any advice from folks who have

taken the fasting test and/or have low blood sugar episodes?

On another note, I started a new job on 1/12. I had not told them

about my pregnancy because I was too nervous about any problems

developing. I finally shared my news late last week, and my boss was

great about it. It feels nice to be out of the closet now!!

Thanks so much for your help!
