Guest guest
Hi, Finally my boy(10 months, unilateral) is in shoes from Friday. I am using Steenback brace. I am facing lot of problems. 1. The upper foot on the leg is swollen and so I am unable to tie the shoe tightly. How to manage this? 2. The boy had 8 casts. So, he still does not have the habit of fully resting the foot on the floor. he keeps his toes and the ground and keeps the heel in the air. So, I am unable to force the heel into the shoe. Even though i does it, he manages to bring out the foot out of the shoe 3. For last 3 days, he was in the shoes on an average of 2 hrs a day. This is causing me lot of concern. Can you please advice, how to solve these issues... 4. Apart from this, if he s not wearing the shoe, what is the alternative. Should I do some physiotheraphy, until he gets accustomed to the shoes... Are there any shoe without the middle bar and are they advised. I know this is not the proper way, but I just want to know incase.... regards,
Guest guest
Hi there, From your description of your sons foot (heel does not come down), it sounds as though he does not yet have full correction OR perhaps he has atypical clubfoot? Does he have any dorsiflexion in his foot (are you able to get his heel down when while placing his foot flat on the palm of your hand and then pushing his toes up toward his knee)? Have you addressed these concerns with your sons doctor? What does he say about it? I scrolled back through the messages and found where you mentioned that you were in India and your sons doctor (second doctor after failed serial casting) was performing the tenotomy procedure after the second cast and then continuing the casting. I would strongly urge you to email Dr. Ponseti directly detailing your sons treatment (his initial treatment and of course his current treatment including castings and tenotomy) and attach photos if you are able. Dr. Ponseti is very passionate about these children and he would be the best person to answer your questions and concerns. You can email him directly at ignacio-ponseti@ uiowa.edu (without the spaces). Good luck and keep us posted! Guest guest
Hi, Thanks very much for the reply. My son has atypical clubfoot if I understood atypical correctly. Yes, he has got dorsiflexion, but upto some extent. The doctor was very much satisfied with correction. The photos were sent to Dr.Ponseti also. he was also happy with what we have achieved here. The main problem was, the boy had 8 casts. He is now 10 months old. Because of the casting, he got accustomed to not putting his right leg straight as casts make it 90 degrees. But when I push his leg into the shoe he keeps it like that, but after some time, with his habit of toe-standing, he pulls back his heel. Hence his leg is cmoing out of the shoe. As far as I see, he had great correction.. But still the below problems remain.. I feel he may be comfortable in a shoe without laces, may be straps or belt shoe.. what do u say? can u tell me the website of shoe. Can I use them for the boy. Now I am using Steenback brace.. What is the difference between these two.. Thanks again for your reply. regards > > > > Hi, > > Finally my boy(10 months, unilateral) is in shoes from Friday. I > am > > using Steenback brace. Guest guest
From what I understand the Markell shoes (and most likely the steenbeck brace and shoes as well) have been problematic for those with atypical clubfoot in that the feet are able to slip out, as you have described. Most have had to be recasted in order to regain correction at regular intervals. The shoes seems to be working well for those within this group who also have atypical clubfoot. You can see this new " Ponseti Brace " with the shoes at: http://www.mdorthopaedics.org/default.html Hope this helps, Daiga > > > > > > Hi, > > > Finally my boy(10 months, unilateral) is in shoes from Friday. > I > > am > > > using Steenback brace.
