Guest guest
Deb, You will get a variety of opinions and experiences on this I think, but I personally think there is a direct correlation. From the reading and research that I have done about low B12 and folate levels, it *possibly* might be a factor in miscarriages/stillbirths etc. I know right now, there are many controversies and the different papers I've read and lectures I've heard all *think* that *perhaps* there is a direct effect on embryology and fetal development. Again, these are my OWN thoughts and opinions from what I have personally read. Since I have read many things, seen many things and discussed many things with many people, I can see a link to low levels (from our WLS) as being a possible reason. Guest guest
Sheila, I have to agree with your thoughts....I've had them myself. I lost my son 1/29 and even though the doc said it had NOTHING to do with my WLS, I have to wonder because I have 2 very healthy children from pre WLS and my son tested high for OPEN Neural Tube Defects and was born with umbilical cord knots. After delivery it was confirmed that my B-12 level was 174 (normal is 200-1100), my folate level was WNL @15. But I am now doing bi-weekly IM shots of B-12 and 4mg (4000mcg) of Folic Acid daily. Folic Acid is water soluble and will not harm me and will hopefully prevent any future NTD's with children I may have. It just seems very probably for RNY patients who malabsorb both Folate and B-12, both curcial in the development & maintanance of cell growth and development, that we may have m/c or loss's more fequently.....but again, this is just ME agreeing with your thoughts/opinions. *smile* Jackie in MI
