Vitamin E

I am seeing a lot on the internet news about Vitamin E in megadoses being

bad rather than good. It is part of the cocktail ordered for me by my

Neurologist. Is anyone else taking mega doses of E and what are the doctors

saying? Should I cut it out of the cocktail? Cheers, Ruth

Dear Ruth,

I have the same concern as you. I take six of the Q-gel 100 capsules

daily, which also contain 900 IU's of Vitamin E (150 IU's/capsule).

Gosh, what next will they reverse about all of the " shoulds " in

medicine!

*********May I make a request? Would listmembers who will be seeing one

of the famous and good mito docs in the near future ask this question of

him or her?

By the way, Ruth, how are you doing now? I know that you were getting

very discouraged a few months ago because of all of the problems you had

and which were progressing. Please post more frequently if you are up to

it. You have helped so many of us in the past, and I am certain that

many would like to return the favor, myself included.

Please tell us how you are!

Take care, and God bless.

Gratefully.

S.

Thanks Malisa,

That certainly answers a lot of questions.

I haven't talked to anyone about Vitamin E since the new warnings came out,

but

when I saw my mito doctor last year, he was concerned b/c I was on a high

amount of CoQ10 and the amount of Vitamin E totaled over 2000 IU a day. Thus,

I

had to stop that particular brand of CoQ10. I actually spoke to Raj,

Tishcon's president, about Vitamin E and CoQ10 and he said he would not

recommend

Vitamin E amounts in excess of 1200 IU/day. At doses higher than that Vit. E

can actually inhibit CoQ10 absorption, according to him.

(and everyone, of course)

It is good that you have confirmation that the QGel is helping you!

That is great. And QGel does have the reputation, probably rightfully

earned.

As far as dose of CoQ or QGel, when I saw a neurologist at the

Cleveland Clinic, 2 years ago, (the one taking adult mito patients now,

not Dr. Cohen) he suggested that I try 100mg for one month, then 200

the next month, then 300, then 400 mg of regualarCoQ, (I dont think

QGel had the reputation yet) upping it each month, and seeing at what

dose I felt best, and keeping it at that dose. In my view, how much we

each need is very individual, and the doctors' recommendation based on

how we feel is the bottom line. I am very interested in how you feel

now that you started the QGel again. Did those nasty symptoms get

better again?
