Guest guest
Hi, Welcome to the board! I am sorry your little one is having a tough adjustment to her casts How is she this morning? I am sure others here will have some more advice for you but from the knowledge I have gained from others, check her toes to make sure they are not showing signs of having slipped up into the cast. That could cause her pain. Otherwise she may just be adjusting to the weight, etc on her legs. Also, which doctor are you seeing? Is he on Dr. Ponseti's list of certified doctors? Where do you live? You will want to be sure that you are seeing a doctor who knows the Ponseti method and doesn't just claim to practice it! Many of us here (including my daughter) have gone through the whole casting procedure and even farther into treatment only to find out that the doctor wasn't really doing the Ponseti method. Then we have had to switch doctors and pretty much start over. We don't want your baby girl to go through that! Check out Dr. Ponseti's website http://www.vh.org/pediatric/patient/orthopaedics/clubfeet/index.html Marilouise 9/9/03, LCF, DBB 23/7 Owen and 3/20/99 > > > Hi, > > My beautiful 10 day old daughter with bi-lateral clubfoot had her > first set of casts placed this afternoon. Guest guest
My son n had his first cast at 7 days. For that cast, and every cast thereafter he would cry alot that day. As the day wore on and the plaster became more dry, he cried less. Not only are they getting used to the extra weight and not being able to move their leg, they are also dealing with the wetness of it all day. I know it hurts your heart to hear her cry like that. It tears me up to hear n cry too. And we are now at the bracing stage, which just made the cries louder. Do what Marilouise suggested though..make sure her tiny toes are still pink. If they are then she is more than likely fine, just uncomfortable. Imagine you had to wear a pair of wet jeans all day..you would probably fuss too, right? However, if her toes are looking discolored, or she continues to cry horrendously after the first day..do call the doc. I hope she is doing better today. Let us know if we can help! On a side note...about the Ponseti listed docs. My doc is not on the list (none in Michigan are), but is always in close contact with Ponseti himself. In fact he is going to go visit Ponseti this month. The only variance he has to the Ponseti method is that my doctor chooses to have the parents soak the casts off instead of him cutting it off. I have consulted Ponseti about things in the past and he has been in full agreement with our Doc. You do need to be careful of course, but the list isn't the end all be all..in my opinion. And anytime you question something your Doc does or says, don't hesitate to consult Ponseti. The key is to inform yourself and ask TONS of questions *hugs of support* Donna > > > > > > Hi, > > > > My beautiful 10 day old daughter with bi-lateral clubfoot had her > > first set of casts placed this afternoon. Guest guest
When the plaster is wet, it's cold. As it sets, it gets very warm. Your little one is probably getting used to the new sensations of the cast on her legs. You will want to make sure that there is enough cotton padding around the top edge of the cast (near her thigh) so that the plaster is not irritating her skin. You can roll up a blanket and place it under her legs to help support them when she's in her car seat/bouncer etc. What doctor are you seeing? Keep us posted on how she is doing please! Guest guest
that reminds me! n is such a wiggler, by the evening he would have wiggled so much the cotton padding would slide and the plaster would rub his thigh and he would cry cry cry. I would tuck some kleenex around the edge and inside and hold it in place with some of that self stick ace bandage-y stuff and he would be happy as a lark again. > > > > > > Hi, > > > > My beautiful 10 day old daughter with bi-lateral clubfoot had her > > first set of casts placed this afternoon. Guest guest
Hi, She's still crying, although a little less. We're taking her to the Dr. tommorow so he can check the casts. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep you posted. > > > > > > Hi, > > > > My beautiful 10 day old daughter with bi-lateral clubfoot had her > > first set of casts placed this afternoon.
