Drew and I go thru her backpack in the evening and clean it out. Theres always stuff in there that shouldnt be in there. We let her know that toys arent to be taken to school and that we'll be doing random checks. If theyre found, shes on restriction which in our house means no tv, radio, computer, toys etc. She can read books in her room, do her homework, study and help out around the house w/ extra chores. Theyre 13 and almost 9 now.. but this has been a house rule since the beginning. I dont think kids are too young for chores... the chores just have to be age appropriate. For example, Ethan at 2 will clean his room w/ help every night before bed and put away all the toys he's strewn about. If he brings any in the living room, he cleans those too. Not that I always agree w/ Dr Phil but on this one particular issue, I do. If it gets extreme, take EVERYTHING out of his room except his clothes and bed and he has to earn the stuff back.
