Theresa,

I am sorry to hear that little Dylan has to have this done. Although, I am

not sure about this procedure but it sounds like " major " surgery to me. Am

I correct? Did Dr. Herzenberg suspect that Dylan was going to need the

tendon transfer prior to his check up yesterday? What are the determining

factors that come into play when it is decided that a child should have such

a surgery?

Subject: Tendon Transfer and Gait Study

We had a follow up with Dr. Herzenberg today. Looks like Dylan is

probably going to need the tendon transfer. We are going to go back

in the spring for a Gait Study (had anyone else had one of these?)

and then we'll schedule the tendon transfer for when he's out of

school next summer. Dr. H said Dylan won't need any pre-op casts

because he's still very flexible, but that he'll be in casts without

being able to put any weight on them for 6 weeks. That's going to

be tough with a very active 4 year old (well, he's 3 now, but will

be 4 in February). Just wondering if anyone else here has been

through this. I will be asking for more advice as we get closer,

but just wondering if anyone can give me more information from a

personal point of view.

Thanks!

Theresa

Oh Sweetie, I'm so sorry! Hang in there and keep your eyes on the

prize! This too will pass. Just one little step at a time...

We're rooting for you and keeping you in our prayers,

Hi Theresa,

Our daughter Emma had tendon transfers done on both feet shortly after her

fourth birthday. The first two days were the worst because of the pain. In

Emma's case, the epidural they gave her (given just before surgery) didn't

work so managing the pain didn't go well once she was awake. Other kids seem

to have had a much easier time of it.

Six weeks in casts is a long time but Dylan will adapt pretty quickly. We

spoiled Emma with attention which made up for some of her loss of

independence.

It's late and I can't think of what else to mention but feel free to e-mail

us if you have more questions.

Dan
