Guest guest
I do not think it is too early at 1 year as long as you are eating well. My doc said 2 years but the book I had said 1 year. I actually gave up my BC pills at 8 months because I could eat well and I got pg right away but had a miscarraige but it was not related to the surgery. I ended up getting pregnant again 4 months later and am currently 10 1/2 weeks pg at 15 months postop. I think it is up to how well the person is doing, there are so many on this group that got pregnant within the first year and are doing really well so 2 years sounds like too long to wait in my opinion. good Luck with everything. Guest guest
Definitely ask your surgeon specifically. If he doesn't know that is a problem. Most surgeons recommend 18 months to two years of waiting however quite a few state you only have to wait a year. But all surgeons that I have interacted with and heard of state at least 12 months of waiting. It is preferred that your weight has stabilized before starting and that you have been faithfully taking prenatal vitamins for a month or so before attempting pregnancy. Hope this helps. To start trying at a year is probably fine. Rasley mailto: drasley@... BTC, Columbus, 10/7/98 Pregnancy after Wls > I really have no clue could anyone tell me... Guest guest
> Definitely ask your surgeon specifically. If he doesn't know that is a > problem. NO surgeons " know " . As a matter of fact...I haven't met or heard of a single bariatric surgeon who knew SQUAT ONE about pregnancy. Must better would be to ask a midwife or obstetrician. they know much more about pregnancy and the nutritional requirements of pregnancy than a bariatric surgeon would. (I've even heard of bariatric surgeons recommending ABORTIONS to women who get pregnant within a year of WLS....asinine!) > But all > surgeons that I have interacted with and heard of state at least 12 > months of waiting. And this recommendation is much more a CYA thing than a " because of solid research and empiracal evidence " thing. And it's much much much more of an individual thing that that. How are you able to eat? How has your recovery been? Your weight loss? What was your starting weight? Do you have any problems eating often enough or enough volume of food? Had any problems with anemia? are you being healthy and making good food choices and having an active lifestyle? If you are having trouble eating, not eating healthy foods, not being active...doesn't matter if you're 2 months postop or 15 years postop, that's not good for pregnancy. If you are eating well, able to eat often enough, able to slow down your weight loss if you tried, making healthy choices, being active, not had any problems postop...then it matters little if you are 2 months out or 15 years out. Guest guest
i beleive the surgeons vary with the wait time like from 1 yr to 18 months post op..I feel a year is sufficient if you are feeling healthy and have reached a healthy weight for yourself. I got pregnant for the first time when i was apx 10 months post op and I was not ready for that, unfortunalty i miscarried but i feel perhaps it was because i wasnt ready physically at the time .. now im 18 weeks along with my first baby/son and 2 yrs post op and i feel good and healthy... good luck to you hon! > I really have no clue could anyone tell me... Guest guest
The doctor answer is that it is best to wait until 1 year post or until your weight stabalizes. Although there are a lot of us who got pg earlier than that. I got pg at 4.5 months post-op and had a healthy baby boy. I started pre-WLS at 269, was 180 when I got pg, and ended the pg at 159. I then lost to 134 which I am now (had him on June 30, 2003). Its important to have an OB who is familiar with the situation I think. They were very supportive and not " freaked out " since they had dealt with it before. Happy baby-making! Mommy to , 3 yrs old and Tyler, 6 months old > I really have no clue could anyone tell me... I'm a year and a half out and have been trying since my one-year anniversary to get pregnant. I had surgery August 30th, 2002. I double checked with my surgeon to see when it's " safe " to get pregnant and he states a year. Soooooooooooooo, it's on to baby- making for you at a year, too! Good Luck! Guest guest
I think how long to wait to get pregnant is an individual thing and not a certain time like 1 year or 18 months. My surgeon has his patients sign a statement saying they won't get pregnant for 24 months but he gave me the okay at my 1 year checkup because I had lost all my weight in the first 6 months and had been at the same weight for 6 months. I think it is best to wait until you are at goal (or close to it) or at a stabilized weight before trying to get pregnant but that is just my personal opinion. Good luck!!!
