How long was he out of casts before you got this set on? He may be a little

achy and a lot mad about being tied up again.

16 mo old with casts-help

My son just started the Ponseti method and received his first set of

casts yesterday. He's 16 months old tomorrow. He's been refusing

to sleep in his bed, screams/cries a lot, only slept 5 hours last

night (compared to 11-12 on a normal night). Are there any other

parents on this board who started their child on this method when

they were older. I'm curious to hear how older children typically

react to this treatment. I'm not sure if 's screaming/crying

because he's in pain or because he's mad that he has casts on.

I called the doctor's office and they said we could have his casts

removed tonight and to come in tomorrow...however, I'm starting to

think he's just going through an adjustment phase. I don't want to

unnecessarily remove the casts and then start all over. 's

toes look good and so does the skin by his diaper.

Anyhow, any stories, thoughts, advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!!!

Hi,

He was out of the casts for almost one year. We called Dr. Dobbs

and he said he wanted to see tomorrow morning and, if we

wanted, we could have the casts removed at an ER. So we just got

back from the ER. had some redness around the top of the cast

on his thigh, a big bruise on the back of his heel and what raw

skin (formation of a blister maybe) on the top of a foot (the ER

doctor pointed that out). So maybe there he was frustrated and

hurting....it's hard to say. We'll see what Dr. Dobbs has to say

tomorrow...I'm sure we'll get another set of casts put on tomorrow.

Thanks!

My baby always cried with non-ponseti casts but was always OK with ponseti

casts - that says a lot in my opinion.

s.

Kelsey will be 1 year old on Sunday and just started

the Ponseti treatment last month. She did not have

any difficulty with these casts but when the other

ortho put hers on when she was smaller, she would cry

for about 24-48 hours afterwards. We gave her Tylenol

when she seemed to be in pain but she would then

adjust after a day or so. I know that she was in pain

because the Doctor had forced her foot into a painful

position and then put the cast on. The Tylenol seemed

to help. This however was a non-ponseti Doctor that

did her first casts.
