Guest guest
I'm really hoping that someone is online tonight because I'm panicking. We took off the 3-week casts today and got the straight last shoes with the bar. Our dr said that we had a week to get him to the point that he was wearing the shoes for 23 hours straight. He said to have him wear the shoes for a couple of hours at first. I interpreted that as a couple of hours per day, but now I'm really second guessing myself. Did he really mean 3 hours at a time with a break in between? My son had the shoes on for almost 5 hours today, but they've been off for 2 hours. Do I need to put them back on before he goes to bed? Please advise!!!
Guest guest
YES YES YES!!!!!! Everyone I have talked to, our daughter included went into the bar 23/7 RIGHT AWAY one hour out for a bath etc NO exceptions on this. Who is your doctor if you don't mind my asking, are you using the Ponseti method? I have never heard of only wearing it for a few hours at a time to " get used to it " ! You could lose correction and have to re-cast! You should be removing it every few hours just to make sure his feet look ok - thats it. The only way he is going to get used to the brace is to wear it and maybe fuss a bit, he will get over that quickly!! It only took my daughter one day to get used to the brace. I will be on line on and off for a bit tonight yet. - & Grace > > I'm really hoping that someone is online tonight because I'm > panicking. Guest guest
Hi- Ponseti does not have the children he treats " get used " to the bar. You just go from casts off to 23 hours a day. I would not be giving breaks. Your son is going to get very frustrated on being able to move his feet and then them being confined together again. I would just go cold turkey and keep the shoes on like Ponseti recommends. You don't want to take a chance of relapse which could likely happen if too many hours out of the shoes to early on. > >Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot >To: nosurgery4clubfoot >Subject: panicking >Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 02:15:09 -0000 > > >I'm really hoping that someone is online tonight because I'm >panicking. Guest guest
Personally, if he is tolerating them, I'd put them on him before he goes to bed. If they start bothering him, you can always remove them for a bit and check his feet over really well to make sure there aren't any blisters starting. From what I understand, the biggest issue with babies fussing at first is not because of being in pain or anything (unless the feet aren't fully corrected or there is a sore or blister), but because they can't kick their legs independantly. They do learn pretty quickly to kick them together. I would worry about a relapse happening if he's out of the shoes for too long. went into his shoes 23/7 immediately. Our doctor never mentioned doing it a few hours at a time. You could risk a relapse if he's out of them for too long this early. Just be sure to thoroughly check his feet for the beginnings of blisters and/or sores, especially if he seems to suddenly really starts crying after he's adjusted to the shoes. and BCF 03/25/2004 Our doc didn't have us do this for a couple of hours at a time. My son went right into the 23 hours a day. On 11/19/2004 9:15:09 PM, nosurgery4clubfoot wrote: > I'm really hoping that someone is online tonight because I'm > panicking. Guest guest
The more I think back on our conversation, he said to aim for 3 hours straight and then take them off for a little bit. I know I'm taking them off to check the circulation in their feet plus to look for red spots. I'm so new at this that I'm second guessing everything. What is something I should worry about when I take off his shoes and do I need to take them off during the night to check them? I'm really nervous that the shoes are on too tight. He really seemed to cry when we tightened the strap. > > > > I'm really hoping that someone is online tonight because I'm > > panicking. Guest guest
Now I'm an absolute mess. How many hours out of the shoes could cause a relapse? He had them off for 2 hours. Guest guest
We put them back on about 30 minutes ago. I feel like my nerves are completely frayed. I'm sure I'm just being hormonal, but I really feel like crying. This is way more stressful than the casts. I didn't second guess anything, they just existed. Now I'm afraid that their are red spots on bones, blisters, circulation issues, etc. Will I ever sleep again? Someone please tell me that this feeling of incredible insecurity will not last long. All I want to do is cry. Is this normal? > > > Hi- > > > > > > Ponseti does not have the children he treats " get used " to the > >bar. You just > > > go from casts off to 23 hours a day. Guest guest
Yes! Very normal! At least is was for me. I just wanted to throw the shoes across the room at first, but it does get better. Once he's used to the shoes and you're used to them, you will get into a routine and they'll be no big deal. My son has no problems with them anymore and the only reason I have a hard time putting them on him sometimes is just simply because he's active. It can be tough sometimes to put them on a wiggly baby. But yes, hang in there because it will become easier. Just remember that if he really starts screaming and crying, take the shoes off and check his feet, especially the back of the heels, for blisters. If his feet are okay, you can put the shoes back on. My son started screaming and crying while in his first pair and when we got the shoes off, he quit. I took his socks off and checked and found that he had a blister on the back of his heel that broke. We tried a lot of different things and then cut holes in the heels so we could see if his feet are all the way down. We found out they weren't and that was part of the problem, so make sure his heels are all the way down. I think Kori has a list of tips for getting the shoes on right that is probably in the archives, or she can probably post them again for you if you don't have them already. Hang in there! and BCF 03/25/2004 On 11/19/2004 10:01:05 PM, nosurgery4clubfoot wrote: > We put them back on about 30 minutes ago. I feel like my nerves are > completely frayed. Guest guest
Aw man, you poor thing. Ok, group hug! I totally understand, it's easy to panic and stress when you switch to the shoes. I agree however that the shoes/bar need to be ON the baby 23/7!!! If you let the baby get used to them over a week a few hours here and there he could lose a lot of correction so that 23/7 would be impossible due to loss of correction causing sores and stuff. It's really not as hard as you are worried about though in about 98% of the cases. I suggest you get another person (hubby, mom, close neighbor?) to look at the babe's feet often so that if you " think " there is a red spot, blister, sore coming on, you have a second opinion to guage it by. When we're the only person looking at it, it's easy to over-react and wonder if we should trust our own memory. Dr. Ponseti told us to teach our baby to kick both legs together by grabbing the bar and moving it up and down, so both knees bend together. Our son got the hang of it pretty quick. There may be some initial fussiness, and maybe some difficulty finding a comfortable position to sleep in. These things are to be expected and you just have to ride it out and they'll pass - but remember, you know your baby better than anyone so if the cries seem way beyond a little aggrivation, more than a temper tantrum, then be on guard for sores to be forming. If he's sleeping good and eating good, acting otherwise normal, I wouldn't bother to take them off to check very often. I sure wouldn't wake him up to check. I'm betting that by this time next week you'll look back on this and think, " Wow what a ride! " haha but everything will probably be normal to you by then. Don't feel stupid if you write asking questions, and don't feel stupid if you panic, it happens to the best of us. Good luck! s. panicking > > > >Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 02:15:09 -0000 > > > > > > > > > > > >I'm really hoping that someone is online tonight because I'm > > > >panicking. Guest guest
Thank you!!! If my son likes to sleep on his back, is there something I should do to make him more comfortable? Or, is this a position that seems ok with the shoes. I've heard some people say that sometimes their knees or legs need to be supported and that they've put a blanket under their legs. Is that because they sleep on their sides? > > > > Hi- > > > > > > > > Ponseti does not have the children he treats " get used " to the > > >bar. You just > > > > go from casts off to 23 hours a day. Guest guest
Those pesky hormones!!! You WILL start to feel better, you will get into your routine and your little guy will be just fine! Know that you have found the best treatment available for him, it is a bit challenging getting used to the brace but you really do and in a short amount of time!! Hope you and your little guy have a good night! I wouldn't bother checking his feet unless he fusses. Just make sure his heels are as far down in the shoes as possible, as long as they are, you can't really tighten the strap too much. My little girl is calling (screaming hehe) so gotta go... & Grace > > > > Hi- > > > > > > > > Ponseti does not have the children he treats " get used " to the > > >bar. Guest guest
I hope you have a very uneventful first night! I just wanted to chime in and say that I could have written your post myself three years ago. I remember it so well! I was so used to the casts, but when she got that brace I just freaked out. I never had to do anything with the cast to help her correction, but with the shoes, if I didn't put them on right she was going to lose some correction, but what if I get them on too tight and cut off her circulation? I can't see her toes anymore with socks on to see if they are stilling pinking correctly. What if she gets a sore or blister because I didn't put these shoes on right? What if she's crying and I can't tell if she's just annoyed or there really is a problem? Sound familiar?? My anxiety lasted about two days and so did Livie's adjustment period. After the second day, it was smooth sailing from there on out. We never had blister or sore problems and we kept her in the shoes 23 hours a day from the beginning. As long as your little guys feet are fully corrected, you shouldn't have any problems. Do try to relax if possible. Babies can sense a moms anxiety and he may act like he's having problems with the shoes when in actuality he's upset because you're upset. I'll be thinking about you tonight! Let us know how your night goes! Jen & Livie (10-18-01 severe left clubfoot) Re: panicking Thank you for your support. I feel like this bulletin board has truly already been a help. Guest guest
I just wanted to post my support! I remember so well our first few days with the DBB...it sucked! I would have traded them for casts in a flash! Our idiot first doctor said that we could just put them on for a few hours until the baby fussed and then take them off...and that eventually we would " work up " to 23 hours a day. That made no sense to me---babies adjust to things best if they know what to expect and why take the risk of reversing the correction? Of course, the guy was also already talking about surgery and additional casting so he obviously wasn't very committed to the success of her treatment at that point. Anyway, we researched it that night and I found the overwhelming majority opinion seemed to be the 23/7 right from the start. So, that's what we did. It made for a few very trying days but she got used to it in no time (even though she kept pulling her heel up in it---but that's another story). After her next round of casting (in Iowa), when she went into the bar she adjusted immediately...like " oh, yeah, I remember this sensation " and we had no trouble. So, it may be a lousy time for a day or two but you'll get through it---hang in there!
