Guest guest Posted November 16, 2004 Report Share Posted November 16, 2004 OH YES! Tongue tied - well, you try to do anything with a tongue that won't go out past your bottom teeth! He would be exhausted trying to suck and wear out before he was full. I was nursing him NO JOKE every FIFTEEN MINUTES 24 hours a day! I went to dr. after dr. looking for someone who would clip the tongue flap. Several agreed it prevented him from eating but wouldn't clip it. Some wanted to put him to sleep first. Finally when he was four months old we found a doc who said, " Yup, he's tongue tied! " He sprayed some numb-stuff in there, snipped it and we left three minutes later! Got to the car and I nursed Everett. He ate and ate and ATE and ATE! It was amazing how much he ate less than 10 minutes after it was done. That was the day I got my baby - the first 4 months were sheer hell, just this black hole of exhaustion feeding him non-stop day and night. Tonue tied also causes speech problems so if you kid isn't clipped it may explain any speech problems he may have (again, imagine talking with a tongue tied to the floor of yoru mouth) s. > Whoa..whoa..whoa.are you telling me that when the baby is tongue- tied it is > hard to breast feed? The doctors told me (and continue to tell me) that it will stretch out. doesn't have a lisp (sp?) or anything. Does it always need to be cut? Cutting it kind of freaks me out..lol. Can that be done at any age? However, it didn't affect his breastfeeding at all - he nursed until he was almost 4. We did not get his tongue clipped. (now 3 months) couldn't get his tongue past his lower gum. He, like ee's son Everett, nused constantly. He'd fall asleep out of sheer exhaustion, but wakw up minutes later wanting to eat again. He also had a very difficult time gaining weight - people ask me now if he was a premie since he's still rather small. At 6 weeks old, we took to a pediatric dentist (same one we take Jakob to) and she clipped his right then and there. It was amazing the difference it made for him. I think Jakob's case shows the frenulum can stretch out. I would definitely suggest the clipping if it is severe. Like in 's case, his frenulum came to the tip of his tongue. I stayed in the room and even held 's hands when his was clipped. In our case, the dentist had him suck a bit of powdered sugar off my finger (he doesn't take a pacifier much) then just clipped it. He was more just angry from being held down rather than truly in pain.
