Guest guest
My doctor always stretched my daughter's foot for a little while before he would begin applying the new cast. (He also would make sure she was calm by singing to her and talking to her for a few minutes before he started--and she's never cried or fussed when he casted her!) But I did notice that the manipulations were very subtle--it almost didn't look like he was doing anything but rubbing or massaging her foot. But I know that he's actually moving " stuff " around. Although like someone else posted, he always has the tech do the actual casting while he holds the foot. I don't see how they could hold the new positions & do the casting. It seems like the bones or whatever would just move back. The cast is necessary to hold them in position for those few days or a week or so while they get used to their new positions, right? So if you could just move them & they'd stay--no need for a cast??!!!?? My daughter had her tenotomy at 7 weeks under general. It was definitely harder on us than her. The actual surgery was only about 20 mins. from the time they took her to the doc coming out & saying it was done--we actually missed him because we went to the gift shop to get her a bear! She was very sleepy the rest of the night, but otherwise fine. I gave her baby tylenol for the next 2 days, but only if she seemed a little fussy & nursing didn't help. It was an all-day affair at the hospital, but mostly paperwork beforehand, and recovery afterwards. They wanted her to stay a little longer in recovery because she was so little. All in all we were there from 11 am until about 4 PM. Of course, that's not counting all the time we spent stressing the night & morning before...:-) But everything turned out fine! Having been through the surgery with gen, and reading other's experiences with just a local, I'd have to say I'm glad she got the general all in all. mommy of: Guinevere 5/28/00 (no CF) on 4/12/02 (no CF) Ava Ireland 8/4/04 (right CF, 1 week 3 days left in last cast!!!!) Guest guest
Our Dr did the same in regards to calming Elijah while manipulating. She talked in a pleasant, animated voice and did what she could to make it comfortable. Having had 2 tenotomies w/ Elijah, I def. recommend having it done under general vice local. General was scarier for me, but easier on him and the Dr.... we got better results under general.
