Guest guest
Jayme, reading your post truly brings a tear to my eye. I think back about my own good fortune of finding this group and learning about the Ponseti Method - someone from a parenting site that I belonged to sent me an email when she learned that my newborn had clubfoot (unfortunately, her then-6yo had had numerous surgeries and further complications and she was wanting to save us from the same fate) -- she directed me to the parentsplace board to learn about the Ponseti Method and then from there, I was directed to this group. I just think how incredibly lucky it was that I decided to take a look after getting that email. I think that all of our combined enthusiam and willingness to share our experiences has a ripple effect. It reminds me of that old commercial....you tell two friends, and they tell two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on.....I just wish there was an easier/quicker way to get the word out there so that no other clubfoot baby ever has to go through painful correction and/or unneccessary surgery. Keep us posted on Ava's progress with Dr. P! Guest guest
Jayme, I'm so glad you found Dr. Ponseti. We were in a similar situation where our son had been seeing a non-Ponseti doctor and he was scheduled for surgery. That got me on line doing research and I found Dr. Ponseti and this group. I posted to the group asking about the surgery and they convinced me to try this first. I also talked with Dr. Ponseti on the phone who assured me it was not too late to correct my baby's feet, he was 10 months old then. After six casts with a qualified Ponseti doctor, just had his tenotomy a week ago and his feet are corrected already. Our previous orthopedist never corrected his feet in six months and finally referred us for surgery. I don't know if you'll see this before you go, but in the future if you go to Iowa make sure you fly with Angel Flight, www.angelflight.org They will fly you to Iowa and back for free. Of course if you're going to stay there for three weeks you may want a car, but just thought I'd let you know you can fly there if you want. Good luck and let us know how it goes. and 11/10/03 bilateral clubfeet > Greetings from South Dakota, > > I am thrilled to share that Doctor Ponseti himself called me today. > What a joy! Guest guest
Jayme didn't I tell you Dr. Ponseti was a " God thing " ? Ya, just wait till you go there in person, it's so.......well, I don't know the words to describe their kindness. If you end up staying for an extended period in Iowa City give me a holler and I'll point out a few things you can do to pass the time between castings, OK? s. There is a peace that has come over me that I can't explain.
Guest guest
I fell in to this group when it was only a couple months old. I think about how nearly I missed learning about Dr. P......I don't remember how I found the group either, just one day it was there and the next day I emailed photos and the next day Dr. P called me at home and a week later I was in his office. I am sitting her smiling thinking and remembering all the wonderful care we got (both babies) not just from Dr. P, but from parents here, and all the happy endings I have read from others here. s. Jayme, reading your post truly brings a tear to my eye. Guest guest
Yes Angel Flights are true angels!!!! You won't need a car, the bus system there is fantastic! (and mostly free!) Driving and PARKING in Iowa City is a nightmare, and also really expensive. The RMD house has shuttle service for trips to grocery, etc., and the bus can take you any where else on about a 15 minute schedule (bus stops across the street from RMD about ever 15 minutes)....There were even times that the motel (when RMD was booked) shuttle drivers took me on personal errands for free.... Not that I have spent much time there! LOL! Actually about 95 days worth off and on over the past 4 years. s. Guest guest
Dear Jayme Well done - hope all goes well for you tomorrow. Being in the UK, I will probably never get the chance to see or speak to Dr Ponseti, but his reputation over here is growing. Like you we originally went to a so called ponseti method consultant, but things weren't working out as we were expecting from all the things we had read about Ponseti on the internet. I actually emailed Dr Ponseti about our concerns, and was amazed that he took the trouble to write back to me and refer me to a lady called Naomi in the UK who is just fantastic. she has been in Iowa and learnt the method from Dr Ponseti himself. We feel privileged and so thankful that Dr Poseti took the time out to get us going in the right direction. Our son has been in his sandals for 5 days, and we are so pleased with his progress. Good luck again - lokk forward to reading your updates! Stella - 's mum > Greetings from South Dakota, > > I am thrilled to share that Doctor Ponseti himself called me today. > What a joy! Guest guest
Jayme, Again, that is such wonderful news about going to Iowa! Please have a safe road trip. I know how heartbreaking it is thinking about the previous doctor who treated clubfoot 'badly'. I too was so upset about the first doctor who treated my daughter and I used to cry because I thought of all the persons who still continue to go to him receiving bad treatment. When we decided to get a second opinion and eventually change doctors I didn't want to confront my old doc because he was extremely arrogant and it would have done me no good. Plus I would have said things in an angry rage that I would have ended up regretting. So I wrote him a letter. Here is what I sent: Dear Dr. Hanway: With keeping our best interest for our child in mind, we have decided to continue treatment for Shook elsewhere. After doing in depth research on clubfoot and the Ponseti Method treatment of clubfoot, we felt she was not getting optimum results. We have started treatment with Dr. Herzenberg in Baltimore, MD. I am sure you are aware of his credentials and expertise in clubfoot treatment and limb lengthening. At 's first visit with Dr. Herzenberg, he spent an hour looking carefully at her feet and took extensive x-rays of her feet, and ultimately determined the feet were not completely corrected in the first place and that is part of the reason the shoes and DBB were not staying on. Which I might add you were absolutely no help to us in that area and recommending us to take her socks off was positively the worst decision you ever made. In addition, the dorsiflexion is not to Dr. H's satisfaction either and another tenotomy will have to be performed. is currently in casts again because we are starting over. We have lost 5 months and poor has to go through this all over again. My recommendation to you: I contacted Dr. Ponseti himself and he has no knowledge of you nor are you listed on his website as an authorized doctor to use his method. If I were you, I would contact Dr. Ponseti himself and do what he recommends to become apart of his forum. In fact he is having another conference in November. I truly believe you understand the positive results of the Ponseti Method and choose to practice it, however, you need to fine-tune your efforts and physically study this method more closely so patients like sarah do not have to go through this process again, relapse or have future surgery(ies). Good luck to you on your future endeavors. Sincerely, and Shook Can you believe he actually said to take 's socks off? That was his answer when the shoes kept slipping off. And because we are naive parents, we did it thinking doc knows best. In one day, had blisters the size of M&M's all over both feet. I cried for hours feeling like a horrible mother, I felt so bad. As much as I dislike 's old doctor, my goal is not to ruin his career. Although clubfoot is not his area of expertise, fixing broken bones may be. And present day, I still talk with the orthotist who works with him and he has recently told me he took my letter to heart and is planning to get further training in Ponseti method. I hope and pray it is true so no more of his patients end up like sarah. I still have yet to contact him nor do I plan to. Sorry this is soooooo long! Good luck to you and Ava. Guest guest
Jayme, Hi, just wanted to let you know my dh Marty, is bringing our little Ava out to Iowa for an appt. on Friday. It's a follow up visit. Hopefully they will not be staying long. Will you be staying at the RMH? If you have any early pics of Ava from birth, before she was casted make sure you bring them. He likes to keep one for the file. Sometimes he will even keep the footprints from birth. I can't say enough wonderful things about the care given to the babies out there. Good luck and have a safe trip! KK > Greetings from South Dakota, > > I am thrilled to share that Doctor Ponseti himself called me today. > What a joy!
