Thanks ,

Here is my long-winded birth story.

My due date was December 3rd, but I had a feeling I would go a little

early, as I did with my last baby. Then, in the last couple days, I

was pretty sure I would have her within the week. But, on Thursday,

my daughter came home from school with a 102 degree fever, and sore

throat. Then I started hoping that I wouldn't go into labor. I

wanted the kids to be able to come see the baby born. Those plans

had to be changed, since I went into labor that very same night at

about 10pm.

I put my kids to bed, my husband went to bed, and I decided to sit

down and watch an episode of Survivor that I had taped. I watched

the show, then got ready for bed about 10pm, and about as soon as my

head hit the pillow, I felt a contraction. I had been having lots of

Braxton-Hicks contractions all along, but these were different. The

were coming every 3-4 minutes right away. I tried to go to sleep

anyway, figuring I had hours of labor ahead of me. Of course I

couldn't sleep, so after an hour or so, I got up and packed my bag

for the hospital, and wandered around the house doing little chores.

I was thinking and thinking about what to do next.

To backtrack to my third baby, here is how he arrived. I was in

labor all day long, but not in a lot of pain, so I didn't realize it

was really labor. I stayed at home until the pain became intense,

then decided to head to the hospital. To my surprise, I was already

at 10cm, and my son was born about 10 minutes after arriving at the

hospital. My two older kids were there to witness the birth because

there was no time to get anyone to take them home. They were so

thrilled to see their brother born, and I was pretty thrilled to have

labored and delivered " all natural " .

So, I was thinking about all these things when I went into labor this

past Thursday night. With my daughter sick, the kids were not going

to be able to come see the birth. That also kind of meant that I

couldn't wait till the last minute to go to the hospital, since I

would have to make arrangements for someone to come over and watch

the kids. Plus, it was the middle of the night by that time, and not

the easiest time to line up a babysitter. So, I decided to change

plans. After I had been laboring about 4 hours at home, I woke my

husband up and had him take me to the hospital.

I checked in around 2am, was told I was at 4cm, and my husband went

back home to arrange for my Mom to come watch the kids. While my

husband was gone, I decided to get an epidural. I didn't have one

with my 3rd baby, but the circumstances this time were quite

different, and I felt like I needed the epidural, so I went ahead and

got it. I labored the rest of the night comfortably thanks to the

epidural, although I didn't get a wink of rest. At the last minute,

(around 7am) when I went from 7-10 cm very quickly, the pain started

to come through again. I was yelling for about 5 minutes before I

figured out I could push, then it didn't hurt so much.

Three pushes (one contraction) later and was born. I was

amazed how fast she came out. I was hoping to avoid an episiotomy,

which I did, but I tore a little and needed 3 stitches. The doctor

said I wouldn't have torn at all except that the baby came out with

her hand next to her head. She also came out with quite a bit of

meconium in the water, so they took her immediately to the warming

table and listened to her breathing and such to make sure she didn't

aspirate any. She was fine, and they handed her to me a few minutes

later. The afterbirth came out easily, and the doc stitched me up in

about 2 minutes. I tried breastfeeding her, and she latched right on

like a pro.

Before my WLS, I had two babies (when I was about 250 lb). My first

was 8 lb 8 oz, and my second was 9 lb. After WLS, my son was 7 lb 5

oz, and was 7 lb 6 oz. So, the post-WLS ones have

definitely been smaller, but very much in the normal range. I think

my first two probably would have been smaller too if I hadn't been

obese during my pregnancies.

Hope this answers your questions. I'll check back here again later.

(Ha, ha, maybe much later if this baby decides to be awake in the

middle of the night as she has been doing so far!)
