I was told that we do not absorb the calcium carbonate as well as the calcium

citrate.

Why do you say that taking Tums for your calcium is not good? My surgeon told me

to take 2-500mg tablets a day and now that I am pregnant, I take 3 a day. Just

wondering why you said that. I asked him about the difference between calcium

carbonate and calcium citrate and he said it didn't matter as long as you are

getting calcium in. If anyone has info on this please feel free to reply as

well.

Thanks

have any sort of relationship with OB's? If not, maybe this is something you

can foster so that they can both use their expertise to figure out what would be

best for women like us. Getting good information for WLS patients is difficult

because there is so much bad stuff out there that is continually passed around,

one good example of this is that some docs STILL recommend for patients to take

TUMS to get their calcium in. Your quest is an honorable one and you are a good

person to keep searching.

different members with different situations. I hope you were not offended in

what I asked, but I have gotten some mixed reviews. Some of us want a good

method of birth control because we also want our bodies to have time to heal, as

it should, not that we don't want to become pregnant in the future. I will not

leave the group. I have giotten some very valuable information which I intend to

use in the future. Again sorry if I offended anyone, wan't intended to do that.

Thanks

From what I have learned most people do not absorb the calcium carbonate well,

especially us. The way it was explained to me was that you may be taking 1000mg

of calcium carbonate but you are only absorbing a mere fraction of it, carbonate

is not a bioavailable to our bodies as calcium citrate. I used to take the

viactives (sp?) and when I found out that it was carbonate and I learned that

carbonate was not being absorbed, especially after WLS, that is when I changed.

I know there are better ways to explain this, check out some of the WLS websites

as this is always a hot topic. There has been a HUGE movement from the WLS

community who have discovered the special vitamin/mineral needs of WLS patients

to educate surgeons so they stop giving this bad info to their patients. One

website I have learned some stuff from is vitalady.com. I get my calcium and

protein stuff from her, but don't know her or have any affiliation with her.

Her business, from what I understand, grew out of doing tons of research after

she developed severe ostio-arthritis after her WLS and she was devoutly taking

the vitamins/minerals her surgeon told her to. On a personal note, TUMS ARE

YUCKY! LOL! The calcium supplement I use is in powder form and I can put it in

stuff like a protein shake and even in my decaf coffee and cereal, anything like

that and it doesn't effect the taste, which is a major plus for me. :)
