Guest guest
I talked with Dr. Morcuende of the University of Iowa yesterday about the trips that he has been making to provide training in the Ponseti method. Over the past three years, Dr. Morcuende has traveled to a number of different countries around the world as orthopedic societies and groups have requested training in the Ponseti method. Dr. Morcuende, Dr. Pirani, Dr. Norgrove Penny, Dr. Sinclair and others have been making trips to other countries to provide Ponseti method training to other orthopedic societies and groups. Dr. Morcuende said that he had probably been on about 14 trips in the past few years. Since Dr. Morcuende is originally from Spain, he and the U of Iowa have kind of taken on the respondsibility to try to go to Central and South American Countries. He said that there are now Ponseti method trained doctors in all countries in South America except Paraguay and Equador. He has also been to meetings in Portugal, Iceland (Scandanavian Orthopedics Association), Thialand and India. He said that he was going to Chile and India again in the next couple of months. He said that they typically have from one to a few doctors visiting Iowa every week. He said that next week there are some doctors from Scandinavia who will be there for most of the week. Dr. Pirani has been to India a number of times,Brazil, Bahrain, U.K., as well as his annual visits to Uganda. Dr. Penny and one of Dr. Herzenbergs associates went to China recently. Dr. Sinclair in Germany has been training other doctors in Germany as well as made a trip to Lithuania. There are also other individual doctors who have set up small orthopedic programs that may include clubfoot treatment in many of these countries. He mentioned that Dr. Speigel from Minneapolis has adopted a clinic in Nepal that he goes to each year. There were many doctors who had orthopedic programs going to different countries prior to the Ponseti methods expansion. Some of these programs were talked about at the 2002 POSNA meeting in Salt Lake City. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/message/11029 and (3-17-99)
