Hi ,

Well - at least the study is over. It sometimes takes time to find the

right mask so be patient. It also takes time to get used to CPAP but some

of what you described sounds like you might need BiPap. The test should

tell them something I hope.

Sleep well tonight.

I am glad the titration study is over, but sorry you had such a

rough time. I have trouble with trying to blow the air out. I am on a

BiPap and it helps a lot with that issue. I also had trouble with masks

leaking and the air blowing into my eyes, but I did find luck with the

Nasal Aire (just the two prongs that go into the nostrils, like an oxygen

tube, but bigger and more flexible). I hope you find something that

works.

Hello all,

I had my CPAP titration study last night..It didnt go so well.

The first mask she put on kept me awake for about an hour as it was

blowing

the air in my eyes, changed it the second one was so tight I lost feeling

in

my upper lip. By this time i had been up two hours. then she switched

to a

nose one not a mask..., it didnt work, switched to a fourth..I finally

was so

overtired I quit complaining and kept it even though it hurt. My nose

and

cheeks today feel as if they are bruised..my whole face hurts. Is this

normal

when you start?

My second question is this. I was completely relaxed and not bothered

at

all by the force of the air coming in but I couldnt breath out and often

felt

as if I was drowning in air, I would have to pull it off for a second or

two.

Is this normal? I just didnt feel strong enough to blow the air back

out.

so now I wonder since I slept all of about a few hours broken if the doc

reading it will think it helped or not. The reason she ordered ait is

because

the first one I had over 116 arousals and over 20 or so awakenings.

since I

was awake most of the night either hurting or drowning I wonder if she

will

think it didnt work.

any thoughts

I experienced the same difficulty breathing out at times with the C-

PAP. It does get better after using it for a while (but in my case -

I still have nights I can't use it. I feel that happens when I'm

particularly low on energy). My diaphragm muscles are assumed to be

weak and I probably need a Bi-PAP rather than the C-PAP to help with

this.

What brand of mask did you end up with? The company that handles my

respiratory therapy needs sent a therapist to my home and they let

me try a few different ones. It does take a little while to get

used to the mask - but some are better than others.

I don't know how you are set up to receive the C-PAP, but I'd call

the company and tell them that you're not so sure about the type of

mask you used in the study and ask if they can bring some other

options along with your C-PAP - so that you can try something else.

Usually, you go back to the sleep center during the day and they let you try

on different masks. When this all goes thru for you, tell them you have a

problem with the mask and they will help you. They want you to have the

right mask as it's a very important part of the sleep equipment. I use the

same mask as a (Naisal-Air) and my mask can be replaced every 3

months.

Give this time, . Once you find the right mix, you won't believe how

rested you feel. Many people struggle at first.

Be sure to ask about trying different masks. My first one was given to me

and I was told there were no choices and it was terrible. Before my last

sleep study, they had me try some masks for fit and then let me take some

one to try. Of course I already had a C-PAP to use them with.

It takes time to get use to a C-PAP. So much has to be correct before it

goes well and then it is still a process. Were you using a humidifier? I

have to have one or I can't use it at all.

I am so sorry you had such a horrible experience. I sleep with a cpap

with 12 lbs pressure. I have new mask that is loose until I turn on

the air and then it fits to my face. I have three bad vertibrae in my

neck so having one that is tight on the neck is out of the question.

The is also one that fits on top of the head like a hat. Speak to the

sleep disorders specialist about your experience. It sounds like the

pressure was too high. Sorry you had such an experience. I hope your

follow up visit with the sleep disorders specialist goes better.
