Hi, .

Studies have shown that calcium carbonate does not absorb well. Thus

Viactive, Tums, etc do not work for people with malabsorption. Unfortunately,

surgeons, nutritionists, etc., just don't have ALL of the information about

everything and the WLS patient's suffer in the long run because we assume that

what

they tell us is necessarily correct.

I did listen to my surgeon and my endocrinologist who told me to take Tums EX

for calcium. I can tell you what it got me.......it got me 4 separate

attacks with KIDNEY STONES!!!!! Since the calcium was not absorbed well it had

to

go somewhere and it was excreted in the urine and built up to make me some nice

EXCEPTIONALLY painful calcium oxylate kidney stones!!! I can assure you that

if you have ever had labor before, you would welcome that BEFORE kidney

stones!! Since I had my first attack with the stones I stopped taking the Tums

and

I have not formed any more new stones, but I had attacks with passing all the

stones that had formed. (YIKES!!) Now I take chewable calcium citrate by

Twinlab and I have had no more problems. There are capsules, of course, but I

just hate pills so I'm sticking with the chewables.

I've read several articles on the internet about WLS and calcium carbonate

versus citrate and most show that citrate is definitely the way to go.

Good luck,

Mandi in Concord, NC
