My daughter Emma had the ATTT done about one year ago but I've never heard

of this. What we were told was that some of Dr. Dietz's patients had this

happen to them shortly after the post surgery casts were removed. The reason

being that he was trying a different technique but has since discontinued

it. We were also told that the chances tendons detaching is very low.

Did they give you any idea of how common it was?

ATTT Question

Hello,

Those of you with older children who have had the ATTT (hope some are left

in the group!) I have a question.

had the operation when he was just barely 2 yrs. old. Now he is 6

1/2. Last night he woke up with the most awful pain in his feet and up in

to his ankles. There has been no unusual activity that may have provoked

this.

Dr. Ponseti/Dr. Dietz warned me that when he entered the growth-spurt ages

(between 6 and 8, then again in the teens) he could literally grow fast

enough that it pulled that tendon loose. Of course with last night's

episode I am concerned. Does anyone have experience with this? With the

pain of growing feet after the ATTT, or with a tendon actually being pulled

loose?

He seemed fine this moring, but I would like any information available.

Thank you,

s.

Hmm, I wonder how long ago they discontinued that method...... I didn't get

the impression the risk was high (during a growth spurt), but that it was

something to be on guard about, be aware of the possibility. For now I will

just monitor the situation as it has been so far one isolated event - but what I

am wondering and I guess I should email Dr. Ponseti to ask, is how would I know

if this was happening? Your note also raises again the question in my mind

about our last check up in August when Ponseti didn't seem pleased with 's

feet and really wanted Dietz to examine them (but he never did).

What was it about 's feet that Dr. Ponseti didn't seem pleased about?

I wrote to Dr. Morcuende about this and he said that he has never seen a

tendon detach so long after surgery. I'm confused because if Dr. Ponseti

told you this he has seen it happen.

Please let us know what Dr. Ponseti's response is.

Well that Dr. M has never seen it is encouraging to hear, thanks. I don't mean

to cause undo alarm in anybody. I can't say Dr. P came right out and said,

" I've seen it happen " , it was just that I was instructed to be aware of this

potential during sudden growth spurts.

I can't say exactly what Dr. P was displeased about - it was more subtle if that

makes sense. He kept looking at them, having him walk around, then he'd pick

the feet up again, furrow his brows and mumble to himself and talk with this

other young dr. in training between themselves and Dr. P is difficult to

understand sometimes...... it was just my gut feeling. I got a real strong

impression he was not pleased with 's outcome. I hear more about this

atypical cf and am becoming convinced may have had that, trying to look

back and remember everything about his condition/treatments/response to

treatment, etc. Remember he was about 21 months old before we found Dr.

Ponseti.
