Hello everyone,

I am in the main group, but new to this one. My son is being seen by

Dr.Lamm & Dr. Herzenberg at Sinai Hospital. I drive from Pa. to see

them. His tenotomy cast was taken off on Friday 10/15. He was just

getting use to the cast and sleeping close to four hours at a time,

now he's trying to adjust to the DBB. He's up every hour or so

fussing. He has right club foot, and his first cast was put on in

the nursery at Sinai, the day I was discharged from having him.

Somehow he keeps getting his foot out of the shoe, I have made them

tighter each time, although Dr.Lamm told me to break him in every

couple of hours, I would rather him keep them on. he has been so use

to sleeping on his side, and now he can't, so now we are back to

being sleep deprived. Does anyone know how long it will take for him

to get use to the DBB?

Hi

I wrote this e-mail on Sunday and it just posted. Sunday night was wonderful, he

finally went to sleep for 4 hrs. again(back to his routine). Hopefully tonight

will be the same. I am abouto give him a bath, which i love doing. Sunday night

I gave him his bath and fed him some rice cereal while he was out of the shoes.

He passed out with little fussing after that. Dr. Lamm Is the main one seeing

n, but Dr. Herzenberg oversees at times when he is in the country of course.

I am also going to be there on Nov. 5th.

Thanks for the encouragement and congratulations on getting to the Dbb .

Liana,

We see Dr. Herzenberg too! Christian was put in the DBB last Thursday

(10/14). He was a side sleeper too and I was really afraid of how this was

going to work out and believe me the first couple of nights were horrible

but he figured out by himself how to turn his legs as if he was sleeping on

his stomach and keep his top half of the body sideways. Did that make

sense? Anyway, this just happened last night. I think he finally got used

to the fact that the shoes weren't coming off. I hope this happens soon for

you too.

Kate,

Thanks for the advice, he is actually doing a little better today. I will keep

all of this in mind, if I have any future problems.

Regarding your son getting his foot out of the shoe, my son had a similar issue

(Right club foot). The problem was solved by putting a VERY thin cushion in the

back of the shoe just above where his heel is. I would not suggest doing this

yourself. Mine was fixed by the man I bought the shoes and DBB from. Once the

cushion was in, the problem was solved.

Regarding him adjusting to the shoes: my doctor used the following as a

guideline: if he fussy but you can soothe him (by picking him up, a pacifier,

etc.) then what he's experiencing is just as adjustment to the shoes. If he

remains upset, even when you offer things that normally comfort him, then it may

be that the shoes are causing him discomfort. You can try taking them off and

you may want to call your dr. and have him take a look at the foot.

Also, when he sleeps, try putting a small pillow, or a rolled up blanket under

his feet. I found that keeping them slightly elevated made my son more

comfortable.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

  • 2 months later...

DBB = Dennis Browne Bar, also called FAB for Foot Abduction Brace or

Ponseti/ Brace (the brace is the same principle, except for

there is

a different type of shoes used)

It is a pair of shoes connected by a bar. The shoes are set to a specific

angle to hold correction of the feet/foot and worn for a set amount of time.

Usually 23h/7days for 3 months and then time is decreased gradually.

Hi -

It stands for Dennis Brown Bar. It is the bar worn with the

straight last shoes bolted on each end. It help to keep the

dorsiflexion and foot from relapsing.
