Hello,

I would like your opinion on my vitamin schedule. Here is what I was taking

before my consult with a nutritionist.

Morning

Thyroid medicine

Calcium citrate (yours)

Multi vitamin

3 hours later

iron (yours)

vitamin c (1000)

Lunch

Calcium citrate (yours)

hair,skin, and nails (yours)

dry vitamin e (yours)

dinner

Calcium citrate (yours)

zinc (yours)

dry vit a & d (yours)

folate 400

bedtime

calcium citrate (yours)

hair, skin, and nails (yours)

Multi vitamin

The nutritionist who believes strongly in Carnation instant breakfast being a

proper post and pre op diet plan changed me to. The reason I question her is

she told me my hair was continuing to fall out because of a lack of protein in

my diet, then turned right around during the same office visit and said I was

getting a lot of protein from my shakes, and I might even want to consider

dropping one or two of them. I am bypassed 150 and she does not seem to take my

malabsorbtion into consideration.

She said I was getting lethal does of vitamin a, I did not need the zinc, and

the vitamin e was a waste as well. This is what SHE put me on:

Before Breakfast

thyroid medicine

Breakfast

Calcium Citrate = 500 mg

Lunch

Iron supplement = 30 mg (ferrous fumarate)

Vitamin C supplement= 70 mg

Dinner

1-chewable Centrum multivitamin (or equivalent)

calcium citrate = 500 mg

Before Bed

Folic Acid=400 micrograms

Calcium Citrate= 500 mg

B-12 sublingual=2.2 micrograms

She even took away my second multi saying if I get the chewable, I will absorb

more so I don't need two. What is everyone else taking, and does this sound

like enough?

How far out are you? Have you had your levels checked? I personally take two

chewable prenatal vitamins and have done so since my surgery in 2002. In

addition to that I take up-cal D (its a powder) to whatever I can to increase my

calcium intake. So far my levels have checked out fine. I would think that

before your nutritionist really can make an educated recommendation specifically

for you she needs to see a complete blood panel done.

I had them checked during my last post op visit, and the doctor said everything

was fine. She does not seem to understand the malabsorbtion thing at all, yet

she is our bariatric nutritionist as well. Needless to say I did not pick my

surgeon for their program, he was just that good.
