Guest guest
I have a good friend who had GD twice, the first time was controlled by diet and the second was insulin. With both times, she ate a modified " Atkins " style diet. She counted her carbohydrates, and balanced them with protein. I was doing Atkins at the time, and we would go out for dinner and she would order grilled salmon with steamed vegetables instead of a potato and would skip the bread. Of course, I was responsible for showing up at the hospital when the babies were born (and the diabetes over) with cheesecake :-) It was just a bummer when I was planning her shower, because I had to make sure all carbs were balanced with protein, and there could be no cake. The cool thing was she got lots more ultrasounds, so she got to see her baby several times before she was born!! Also, after the babies were born, the diabetes went away. Best of luck! Guest guest
Shari, I had gestational diabetes with my daughter pre-WLS and the only thing that I had to cut out was sugar. Now I know that we aren't supposed to have sugar after WLS bu I do know that we can tolerate small amounts so I would suggest just trying to cut out as much as you can and I think you should be okay. Did they say anthing about giving yourswelf shots? The girl I worked with at the time also had gestational diabetes and she had to give herself shots everyday but I could control it by my diet. Best wishes to you. DE EDD#2 8/2/04 " Shari and Bo " swatson11@...> wrote: >Well, we were awakened this morning by the phone ringing. She says she will schedule an appointment for me with a fetal internal medicine specialist, and get me set up with a glucometer machine. I'm SO sad about this. Been feeling like a failure all day long. I know that I couldn't have prevented it, but still, somehow I feel like I should have been able to. Guest guest
Hi, I had gestational Diabetes with my previous pregnancies but it was BEFORE gastric bypass. I see no difference really though. I just has to maintain a well balanced diet and check my sugar levels 3 times a day and do a chart of what they are for the doc. Not just sweet raise your sugar levels, almost anything can, like pastas for sure, they make their own sugars and juices are full of its own natural sugars. it is still okay to have them just in smaller portions and the diabetes should go away as soon as baby is out, so you only have 8 weeks of this. i think you will do fine and you are sure not a failure for getting this, many, many people do, even tiny thin ones God Bless, Robin, NorthEastern, NY EDD- July 27th, 2004 Mommy to: & (twin boys 7 1/2), Madison, daughter, 5 years and Wife to Pup 15 years (October 31, 1988) Gastric Bypass Surgery- October 18th 2002 Start-378, current- 246(pregnant) goal 170 after baby
Guest guest
Shari, expertsused to think it was only simple sugars but now they have come to believe it is the simple carbs. A diabetic is now taught to count carbs and keep their numbers to a specific card count with each meal or snack. I am not sure what those numbers will be for a pregnant woman but I am sure that the perinatologist will have you meet with a dietician who will clarify everything. A lot of gestational diabetics can be controlled with dietary changes alone but some do need insulin injections. Best of Luck.
