Guest guest
Hi! My life was changed forever on Dec. 11, 2001 when I had my gastric bypass surgery. 137 pounds lighter, I have been off the pill for three months now and am trying to conceive my third child. (My 6 year old son and 5 year old daughter were born during my obese days.) Anyway, when I was at my OB/GYN visit last month, I was talking about getting pregnant. My Dr. gave me the o.k. I mentioned not having to do the glucose tolerance test because of the dumping syndrome and my ability to not tolerate sugar. (I can't remember where I read or saw this.) He said that if I were pregnant that he couldn't get me out of that test. I can't believe I'm already stressing about this, but I am. My Dr. told me that especially now that I'm " older " I'm at a higher risk for developing gestational diabetes. Has anyone out there taken the glucose test, or is there a way around it? If you have had the test, was the dumping tolerable? I accidentally had a sip of regular coke once and lived to regret it! I can't imagine what a full bottle of sugar water would do to me! Anyway, I would appreciate any suggestions! Dreaming of looking pregnant and not just big,

They can holler at you all they like, but just print out the PDF document in our Files section about " Pregnancy After Gastric Bypass " or whatever it's called, and carry it to them if they want to be stubborn. But they canNOT force you to take any test at all. There are more reasonable alternatives to the GTT; read back through our archives and you will find some of them. -Kris
Guest guest
You could not tolerate the gluecose test. I did a fasting test. The glucose test requires you to drink Glucola which has 50grams of sugar...a RNY nightmare! The fasting test worked well for myself and many others here. Best wishes! Not saying that I recommend that anyone do this (or not do this)..just wanting to make sure that options are known. And it's always an option to refuse any test or proceedure. Guest guest
You do not have to have the test. I am currently testing my own blood with a little diabetes tester at home. My doc. wants me to monitor my blood for 2 weeks and then he will look at the results. So far it is showing that I am hypoglycemic. Low blood sugar. So thank goodness I've been testing it and now I know I need to eat often.

Guest guest
My OB has me do a fasting blood test after each appointment. I just fast overnight (like I normally would anyway) and go in for the blood draw first thing in the morning. She REALLY wanted me to have the GTT, but I explained to her why it was not a good option for me and she took it upon herself to go read up on it. I love my OB! In other news, I got to go to the ER last Friday night, on the advice of my OB, because of my severe coughing and shortness of breath. Lucky me...I have bronchitis. It's viral, so all they could do was treat the cough. They gave me cough syrup with codiene in it...the sweetness of the syrup made me sick, so I'm just toughing it out now. I have an OB appointment today and will talk to her about it. I'm still so nervous about something going wrong with this pregnancy. It's my first, and I am 28 1/2 weeks along. I NEVER thought I'd get pregnant (15 yr history of infertility), so our little girl is a big miracle! Guest guest
, I am almost 30 weeks along and I had the glucose test about two weeks ago. I never read that I wasn't supposed to do it, until after the test was done. My worry wasn't the sugar, it was the carbonation. I had been told since before surgery that after surgery carbonation was out of the question becasue it stretches your stomach out. I took the test on a semi-empty stomach and except for the minor stomach- ache I got from the carbonation I did just fine. The results were negative and I am thrilled. If you have a big problem with sugar, then ask for the fasting test, but if you can handle sugar pretty well try the test on a semi-empty stomach (not completely empty) and try it early in the morning.
