Guest guest
Eryn... I posted a message about a week ago asking the same question... and everyone who responded seemed to think that the DBB had nothing to do with still not sitting up. He is almost 8 months old and still struggles to sit up without support. I am certainly not a doctor, but it seems to me that it is difficult to balance themselves with the bar on. I watch other babies sit up and they tend to point their feet inwards to balance themselves, and with the DBB, this isn't possible. I know will sit up eventually, I just think the bar is holding him back for now. We only have 1 more month of full time wear, so we will see what happens then. Gavin is going to be 1 in about 3 weeks and he has not mastered the art of sitting up unsupported. He has seen a Neurologist who told me she suspects his lateness with this skill is because he was in the DBB for a long time 24 hours a day. Maybe his legs are weak? He rolls over fine and sits in a high chair now with no problem. He's even pulling himself along with his arms now, but alas, he does not want to sit on his bum. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Eryn, does he have good upper body strength? You mentioned that he is pulling himself along - is this while on his tummy? If so, then I would imagine that he has sufficient upper body (back and tummy) strength and in that case, don't worry too much. Try giving him his hour without the bar for pure play and see what he does then. Sit him up with some pillows around him. Good luck, Daiga and Owen, 02/04/03 Unilateral LCF, FAB 14/24 > Hello all! Guest guest
Gavin has great upper body strength now. He looks like he's doing mini crunches when he's on his back and he can balance on one hand when he's on his tummy. I just think he doesn't ever feel like sitting up. He's a laid back kinda guy! Maybe he will crawl before he sits!!!! Eryn > > Hello all! I was just wondering if anyone else's child was late > > sitting up after treatment. Guest guest
Here we always felt the bar helped them sit up by forming a secure tripod of sorts for them to lean against. s. Guest guest
Maybe he just hasn't discovered any real motivation to do it yet. Can you prop him on the floor with a cushion behind him and give him something neat to do with his hands? I don't know what else to suggest, both mine were early/normal sitters. s. sitting up late Hello all! I was just wondering if anyone else's child was late sitting up after treatment. Guest guest
hello, My daughter was late to sit, 8mo. crawled 15mo and 16mo. to pull up. She spent many, many hours in DBB 20 hours until she was 16 mo and still is 16-18hour now. (She has atypical clubfoot) I always blamed it on the bar. However, in the last few months they have diagnosed her with hypotonia and are in the process of finding out why. She has been evaluated as about 8mo in all developmental areas. (cognitive, emotional, comunication etc.) Is your son hitting all her other developmental milestones? Best wishes, and Sadie > Hello all! Guest guest
Gavin is only behind in his sitting now. He pretty much does everything else but he was a premie also so it seems to me he's more like a 10 month old should be. The neurologist said that he's fine otherwise. He's had alot of tests in his short life. He talks, reaches, eats, smiles and sits pretty well in his high chair. He just does'nt seem to want to sit up by himself. Eryn > > Hello all! Guest guest
It is wonderful that he is on track everywhere else. I found that if there is something to worry about that the medical world is not slow to persue reasons. IMHO you are probably right his legs are weaker from extended bar use or he doesn't feel the need to sit. Propping Sadie up with pillows worked great. It seemed to teach her balance and improve her trunk strength. Good luck, > > > Hello all! I was just wondering if anyone else's child was late > > > sitting up after treatment.
