Guest guest
Here we always felt the bar helped them sit up by forming a secure tripod of sorts for them to lean against. s. Re: sitting up late Eryn... I posted a message about a week ago asking the same question... and everyone who responded seemed to think that the DBB had nothing to do with still not sitting up. He is almost 8 months old and still struggles to sit up without support. I am certainly not a doctor, but it seems to me that it is difficult to balance themselves with the bar on. I watch other babies sit up and they tend to point their feet inwards to balance themselves, and with the DBB, this isn't possible. I know will sit up eventually, I just think the bar is holding him back for now. We only have 1 more month of full time wear, so we will see what happens then. Gavin is going to be 1 in about 3 weeks and he has not mastered the art of sitting up unsupported. He has seen a Neurologist who told me she suspects his lateness with this skill is because he was in the DBB for a long time 24 hours a day. Maybe his legs are weak? He rolls over fine and sits in a high chair now with no problem. He's even pulling himself along with his arms now, but alas, he does not want to sit on his bum. Any suggestions? Guest guest
Eryn, Here's a little info. I found from a Google search: http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/baby/babydevelopment/6505.html#5 There is a poll on this site about sitting. Of the 64,500+ respondants, only 3% said their baby sat independently older than 8 months. While there is a wide range of ages when children reach certain milestones, there's also a limit when a child is not reaching milestones and there is a cause for concern. Here's another link which says that in general a baby will be sitting by 9 months at the latest. http://www.yourbabytoday.com/babyplace/newbaby/newbaby_babydev/dev_sixmonth.html These milestone guides are good because it does give you a baseline so you know when to " intervene " and get a professional opinion. Zoe actually could sit up at 4 months with her DBB on, but not with it off. She was sitting independently by age 5 months, crawled at 8 months, could climb up small slides and onto chairs at 10 months, pulled to a stand at 11 months, didn't walk until 16 months! The dbb made her legs stronger. It might be worth the peace of mind to contact Early Intervention for them to do a developmental screening just to make sure Gavin's development is within the range of normal and not in need of some physical or occupational therapy to get him on the right track...Better safe than sorry and it certainly can't hurt! The DBB does not interfere with how they would normally develop (or not develop). Zoe's sleep " issues " were related to regular stuff, like teething and nightmares. The only time the dbb caused a problem was when the bar or the shoes were too small. Just my 2 cents... Child development is my area of expertise...
