Guest guest
Chelsea sounds a lot like my Everett who turned one year old last week. He can walk - he just doesn't know it yet! haha I think a lot of it is psychological. Does Chelsea get so see lots of other children and babies walking around? A play setting might motivate her to copy the others. Everett hs grown very dependent on push-toys for mobility but he can stand alone. s. Late Walking Hi All, My daughter is Chelsea is late walking. She is 20 months old and she cruises, and can walk confidently (even run) holding my hand, and she has taken a few steps a few times - when I'm very close by, but she isn't ready to let go and walk on her own. She had a check up with her orthopedist last week, and he didn't seem concerned - he thought she would start walking eventually. But I think at this point it is outside the range of normal. I know the Ponseti method isn't supposed to delay development. She has only worn the DBB for nightime and naps for at least 6 months. She is receiving physical therapy once or twice a week. She is also in the early intervention program. Her physical therapist seems to think she is ready to start walking. She is having another evaluation for the early intervention program in about 2 weeks. Does anyone have tips? She doesn't seem to have low muscle tone - although her ankles are a little wobbly. Has she just become dependent on holding my hand? If I don't go in the direction that she wants to go in, she often just drops to her knees. Or if I am more than two steps away, she drops to her knees. Maybe it is just psychological and I should just stop holding her hand and MAKE her walk. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Guest guest
What did Dumbo the elephant hold, a leaf? Maybe try moving towards her holding an object in your hand instead of your hand directly, kwim? Like you hold a wooden spoon and she holds the other end? s. Guest guest
The wooden spoon is a good idea. I will definitely try that. And I think she does realize that it is easier to carry something if she is upright and not crawling. When I got home from work yesterday, my husband had taken a video of her walking several steps yesterday (like 8 or 9!), but when I got home she didn't want to walk for me. And this morning - my husband says she took 6 or 7 steps from the coffee table to her chair with her sippy cup in her hand all by herself! So I think we are making definite progress! She is in daycare 3 days a week. She started in the toddler room in September and she is the only one not walking - actually they have a policy of not letting children in that room until they are walking, but I convinced them to make an exception for Chelsea because of her issues with clubfoot and treatment. She was ready for the toddler room in every other way. So she definitely spends alot of time with other children her age that are walking. Thanks for your suggestions! I will keep you posted! > > Hi All, > > > > My daughter is Chelsea is late walking. Guest guest
Well it sounds like she's just around the corner from turning your house upside down! I actually dread Everett walking, he's so fast and mobile as it is now just crawling I told dh we'll have to tie a heavy brick to him outdoors so he can drag it to move but not get away from us too fast.... (just kidding). s. Re: Late Walking The wooden spoon is a good idea. I will definitely try that. And I think she does realize that it is easier to carry something if she is upright and not crawling. Guest guest
I'm so ready :-) I have been walking around holding her hand since May! I've been half bent over for four months! We have been walking everywhere -hardly using the stroller at all - walking the dog, getting the mail, etc. Because I thought it would help her to practice walking. Of course I will still have to hold her hand when we are getting the mail and walking the dog. But it will be nice when she can walk around the house. My back is killing me! You sound better than my dh - he wants to put her in a velcro suit and stick her on the wall! Meredith > > > Hi All, > > > > > > My daughter is Chelsea is late walking. Guest guest
I just had to say the Velcro suit comment from your husband is hysterical! LOLOLOL Mommy to 12/17/98 and Christian 1/30/04 _____ From: merjill Sent: Tuesday, September 28, 2004 10:12 AM To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: Re: Late Walking I'm so ready :-) I have been walking around holding her hand since May! Guest guest
LOL! I'll keep the velcro in mind! Everett is such a monkey, does your daughter climb a lot? He climbs everything but at least he finally learned how to go down feet first rather than head first. s. he wants to put her in a velcro suit and stick her on the wall! Guest guest
Yes she does climb alot. She likes climbing the stairs, stepstools, at the playground etc. She climbed a full size stepladder when my husband was painting. She can climb into the bathtub... > LOL! Guest guest
Meredith, have you tried a walker toy? We've got a fisher price walker that we've had for all of our kids. It folds down so that they can play with it while sitting on the floor (pre-walking) and then opens and clicks in a locked position so that they can push it (like a stroller or grocery cart). I know that it helped my kids become more confident on their feet. In any case, it sounds like Chelsea is just about there - before you know it, she'll be running!!! Guest guest
That's more scarey than walking. Everett discovered he can reach things off a table if it's over hanging just a tad....I'm on constant alert now to what he may get his fingers on to. s. Re: Late Walking Yes she does climb alot.
