Guest guest
Suhad; Gentamicin IS an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Do you have to have a prescription for it or is it over-the-counter? If a doctor has to prescribe it, then I think I would be asking the doctor if Gentamicin for optica; use is ototoxic (toxic to the hearing)! It is the hearing that is affected by aminoglycosides. Since I am NOT a doctor, I cannot say if Gentamicin for essentially a topical use is ototoxic. I would think that the aminoglycoside would have to be ingested in order to do its damage. Please check. Also ... if you have used it safely before, chances are your daughter doesn't have the 1555 deletion in the Mitochondrial DNA that is sensitive to aminoglycosides. Grandma used to use a saline solution for pink eye .... and sometimes the old fashoined remedies get overlooked. I would use that first for me!!! <grin> .... but maybe that is because I am a grandma! Leanna has used this many times in the past for pink eye and has been fine. However, that was way before a mtio diagnosis. I think she is developing pink eye. By tomorrow I will know for sure. I am trying to be ahead of the game. Is Gentamicin eye drops dangerous to mito, should they be avoided. If so, then what is a safe for pink eye? I appreciate help from all of you. Thanks so much. Guest guest
Hi, I'm new here. I am a registered nurse and have a child with mito. cytopathy. As a nurse I'd say ophthalmic gent isn't absorbed systemically and would be OK EXCEPT having a kid with this disorder AND eye muscle problems I'd say ask your mito specialist (you've probably learned already your GP doesn't know squat about mito). Only the specialist knows if the eye drops are absorbed into and affect they mitochondria in the eye muscles. Since this is a commonly prescribed eye drop, I'm interested to hear his/her answer.
