Guest guest
Hi Dorothy :-) In our case they seem to think there is some relation, and yet its still really a guess at this point. No hard data to support it, in other words. There seems to be three different plausible theories about our situation......one would be that we just really got unlucky and recieved bad teeth genes too, wholly unrelated to the mito. The other one is not totally different, but would take into account a genetic pre-disposition to teeth issues, exacerbated by the effects of chronic disease (being mito). And final one would be that what they think is a connective tissue component to our mito caused the teeth issues in our case. Which one is right is anyone's guess at this point. Obviously in your case, there is a genetic component to the teeth issues, whats less clear is whether its mito related or simply a seperate genetic condition. I am "sort of" being tested for mito at present, though Dr. Whiteman, the kids mito doc, has no question in his mind based on the testing thats already been done on me that I am affected. I am more offically diagnosed with an autoimmune muscle disease (Polymyositis/Dermatomyositis) since 2001, though at the time virtually no mito testing was done (specifically on the muscle biopsy). Prior to April of 2001 I had no symptoms of anything being wrong...was perfectly healthy. However, going back to the different theories about the teeth, theoretically the disease was there and may have been subtly putting a strain on my system during the time when my teeth were taking a nose dive. As I said, its anyone guess at this point!!! Btw, should mention that they do feel our mito is maternally inherited (and did even before I got sick because of my two siblings and their issues as well as other family history). Course, this meant I knew I could become affected at some point, but had prayed I'd be like my mom and get by with minimal issues till I was atleast her age. Hope this helps and sorry for giving you a heart attack!! It always blows me away too when I see something here that sounds so familiar. -- BIG hugs, Kass, proud mom to Chance(10-Mito), Madison(7-Mito), and Abby(6-Mito) Updates (http://www.caringbridge.org/tx/mitowhat/) "Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away" Unknown Dorothy Lincoln wrote: Is Tooth loss really a Mito related issue?? I almost had a heart attack when I read that post. When I was pregnant with all three of my children I lost my teeth at a rapid rate. 3-4 a kid til I needed serious dental work. I cried in the dentist office when he said.. I can fix your teeth but it'll take some serious work... and whatever is causing this will just cause the rest of them to be damaged. I had my teeth removed 2 days before my 28th birthday. I didn't think much of it because the same thing happened to my mom... so I thought it was just that our teeth weren't very strong. (despite excellent care) Now my youngest child might possibly have Mito... Is there a connection? If you have the same problems... were you tested for Mito as well? Did it come out positive? Do you have Mito as well? Have you found the connection in your family? I guess I am just full of questions. Dorothy Lincoln
