Guest guest Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Wear a sign around your neck reading, Oxygen $1 per minute. Make sure you have extra cannulas with you. Walk into the nearest convenience store or grocery up to the counter and tell them you need to fill your portable. Go to the theater and tell them you need a seat with oxygen so you don't have to use yours during the movie. Walk up to a stranger, tell them they look short of breath and you have an extra cannula and would be glad to share some. Walk up to a smoker, tell them you work for an oxygen supplier and are taking future sign ups. (No, I never smoked either).Go to the local fitness center and ask them if they have oxygen so when you use the treadmill you don't have to use your portable. Guest guest Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Hi Bruce, Once again I ask for your help. Can you tell me how sinuses bother your breathing and how much belly( or in this case beer belly) fat bothers breathing. I have tried to say that being 20lbs and a small hiatal hernia sometimes interferes with My breathing Iam being told that is because Iam a woman with woman fat! He complains that sometimes he feels a flap(as he explains it closing in his stomach) I say its pressure on the stomach opening or whatever that is called! He seems to read your advice so Iam hoping for my friends sake he gets a better handle on this because I feel its taking a toll on her. He is Chicago South Side Irish who grew up in bars and gangs so he feels he has to be tough. Thanks again sharon p ph asthma 2008 Subject: Re: Mental HealthTo: Breathe-Support Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 7:58 AM Wear a sign around your neck reading, Oxygen $1 per minute. Guest guest Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Sharon Lots of questions and lots of possibilities but lets start with the sinuses. If we are simply talking congestion, then we're talking about an obstruction. If we're actually talking about swelling or other issues we're talking about a narrowed area for air to go through. Any of these just reduce the amount of air flowing through our nose. Now, while many of us have compensated throughout our lives with mouth breathing, if we're on supplemental oxygen thats only coming through our nose. Weight or big stomachs or any of those other descriptions we want to use may limit us in a couple of ways. First, there is just more to carry. Our heart needs to pump harder, needs more oxygen. Second, there can be pressure upward. It's much like overeating at a meal where then you just find yourself breathing harder or short of breath. It's limiting the area available to your lungs and esophagus and applying pressure. Now, all these things are in degrees. Hiatal hernias can lead to GERD and can apply pressure to your lower esophagus sphincter. It can cause you difficulty in swallowing. If they become large enough they can cause the stomach to protrude into the diaphragm which puts extra pressure on the diaphragm and lungs. I think with all of this the reminder as silly as it sounds is that there aren't walls or anything like that inside our body separating our organs. They all work interactively. They all can impact each other. They share space and may protrude into the area of another organ. As to the flap he feels, I think its definitely something to bring up to a doctor, preferably a gastroenterologist. I'm a firm believer in doing everything I can to manage problems I have in addition to the lung problems. If there is something else impacting my health or how I feel I want to address it. I have many many other conditions but because they are managed relatively well, I'm normally only concerned with my lungs and able to be active and enjoy my life. The " flap " may well be his lower esophagus sphincter. If it's malfunctioning then it can lead to esophagus problems and GERD. All this then impacts our lungs too. If there are esophagus or stomach issues, an upper endoscopy is a very simple and painless procedure to examine those areas. To everyone, bring up all your issues to your doctors. They may or may not be related or give new clues. Don't suffer anything extra needlessly. > > > > > > _____ > > > > > > > > > > > GOOD MENTAL HEALTH> > > > > > > To Maintain A Healthy Level Of Insanity > > > 1. Guest guest Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Bruce... what you write here is spot on.... My problem is, to see a dr for each of my problems I have to see umpteen drs! It's just the medical system now. One for the hand one for the foot and on and on. Gone are the days where I can see basically MY dr and an occasional specialist if needed. They're ALL specialists now. mumblemumblemumble And while I'm at it ;o) here's one: I see a good rheumy (I like him) and then I go approx 50 miles in the opposite direction (not on the same day) to get my pain meds for which I see the rheumy! He does not dispense pain meds. I live in between.... even my pcp does not dispense pain meds. So pain meds are dispensed by someone who could care less about my medical condition!!! mumblemumblemumble. MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. NasturtiumsDon't fret about tomorrow, God is already there! Guest guest Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Sher I'm fortunate that as many doctors as I have they are all close. My Primary, Neurologist, Oncologist/Hematologist, and Nephrologist are all in the same building. I am within 15 minutes of all my doctors. Saw 17 last year and know I will see at least 11 (some only annual followups) and that's assuming no more referrals. One thing you mention is a major difference between the US system and that of other countries. In other countries the primary does much more. Here specialists do. I personally prefer the specializations as I want someone most knowledgeable in the field. However, I think the ideal situation has them all in one location and practice and sharing information. I did have four in the same practice at one time. If I did everything my rheumatologist wants no telling how many doctors I'd be seeing and every part of my body would end up being biopsied. lol As to why your rheumatologist doesn't dispense pain meds, that's a bit unique. > > > > > > > > > _____ > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > GOOD MENTAL HEALTH> > > > > > > > > To Maintain A Healthy Level Of Insanity > > > > 1.
