Guest guest
Hi there, We just went through this. Joe just turned 4 and finally is potty training. I wondered for such a long time why he just sat there and couldn't seem to figure out which muscles to push to get things moving. Finally one day just a few months ago he was sitting there and pee came out and then he pushed and it was the "lightbulb"... the realization that he could make it work. All the docs were telling me he may not have nerve sensation, he may never train, yada, yada, yada... the stuff they tell parents. I didnt encourage strongly or discourage sitting on the potty. Just let him tell me when he wanted to (for along time it was only 1 or 2 times a week). He is doing so well with the potty training now we are trying the next few nights without diapers. The accidents happen but are getting less and less frequent. He is just doing everything a little slower and a little different then the rest of my children did, we are just happy with every little bit of progress we get. He is also very verbal and cognitively scores above age. Lots of luck and patience with your training. My almost 3 yr. old (myopathy, possible mito) loves to sit on the potty and does so a few times a day but never pees in it. Doesn't seem to know how to control that part of his body or something? I thought I'd ask you all about this. Cognitively, he's doing very well and is "normal" but he does have considerable muscular weakness as well as absent reflexes, constipation, failure to thrive (he gained 2 lbs!). I know that I will probably need to teach him when he's peeing by letting him run around naked for a day or so (in the house, of course). It's still a little cold for that even here in Florida. Any thoughts? Anne R Please contact mito-owner with any problems or questions.

Guest guest
I have been going through the same thing with my daughter. Maybe he, they are just not ready yet. Grace is only 19 months and I think she is mentally ready, she does all the right things. When she is wet, dirty she will get me a diaper to change her, and she will hide to do "number 2." But when I put her on the potty, nothing. It is also hard because she cannot communicate with words. I have heard that a lot of these children have sensory problems when it comes to things like this. I guess my advise is to keep trying, just take it easy. They will learn when they are ready. My other two children just did it one day. I had been trying and trying to get them to use the potty. Just about when I gave up, both times, they just started doing it. Good Luck!
