Darla;

Just a thought from a grandmother ..... is it possible that your breasts

are a different shape when you are lying down as opposed to sitting up? Could

your breast shape be affecting Zipporah's ability to breath as she feeds?

Lots of Mito adults have shortness of breath issues ... as well as apnea

related problems.

zipporrah is getting frustrated with nursing when I sit. She only wants

to nurse while I lay down. Of course when I am away from home it is pretty

hard to just lie down and nurse so it is causing problems. She will nurse

briefly, a therapist thought to just satisfy her hanger a bit, and then start

kicking and screaming and pull away from me As soon as I put her upright,

she will dive for me and try to suck on my face and obviously wants to eat

again. But as soon as I put her back toward the breast she complains again.

If I lie down she will then nurse and complete the feeding. She also has

problems with nursing while on her affected side and struggles with that.

My breast supply has been fluxuating

Are you seeing a feeding therapist? I wonder if someone who has

experience with feeding a baby with cleft lip and palate could help you. They

are unable to suck and accomodations have to be made for feeding them.

Maybe some of the methods used for feeding these babies could help you. I

don't know--just an idea.

Have you tried the Habermann? Because of Leah's cleft palate remember

she couldn't suck and all she had to do was squeeze the nipple down for

the milk to flow in to her mouth. Now a word of warning, the new

nipples are really hard to press down in such a way because of the strong

plasticor whatever they use to make the nipples. It takes a bit for

the hole to relax after several uses; then the milk some times comes out

too fast. And the best part of the habermann nipple is you can press

on the nipple too to help the milk come out. I did that in the beginning

when Leah was very young. As your therapist about the Habermann and

see what she thinks. Talk to a nursing specialist or the speech therapist

should help you in this area, too.

has problems with nursing while on her affected side and struggles with

that. My breast supply has been f! luxuating due to her up and down

nursing issues so I am using a breast pump to encourage a steady supply

which is helping. Today I was talking to a nursing professional and

she was concerned about Zipporrah's strong urine smell saying it could

be a sign of dehydration. I want to offer liquids from a bottle to

help BUT she has problems cupping the nipple due to her tongue being affected

from the stroke episode. It stays flat so she can't grasp it and

suck properly. NONE of the bottles I have tried, several types, have

worked. I am foregoing the gall bladder operation this week due to

these issues but was wondering if anyone had any ideas to help with her

eating. Thanks for listening! Darla: mommy to Asenath, Zipporrah,

and the gang
