About 50 years ago (smile!) my brother, who most likely has Mito too, had

very bad baby teeth. He didn't have them pulled and the adult teeth are

fine. As I recall, however, they painted some "stuff" on them to seal them

and he lost them soon after. He would have been 5 or 6 at the time.

He had a course of streptomycin for a very bad ear infection and the teeth

thing showed up after. He also lost his hearing ... possibly from the antibiotic.

Thinking about it now ..... it has been written that Co-Enzyme Q10 can protect

the enamel of your teeth... so I guess that if CoQ is low it follows that

teeth enamel might be damaged or poorly protected!

Make sure that you check about the kind of anaesthesia the will be using

for the dental work... I would guess that if he is being admitted to hospital

for the dental work, they are planning to use General Anaesthesia. Make

sure that you print out the article about Anaesthesia under "Information"

(Medical Practitioners) on the UMDF website <http://umdf.org/> and

give it to the anaesthesiologist as General Anaesthetics are dangerous for

some Mito folk.

my son Colby has had alot of teeth problems. He also had 4 of his bottom permanent teeth pulled, and 8 silver caps put on, most of those have fallen out. He also was hospitalized for this and looks like he is ready to go in again. We live just outside of Wichita, KS, and had to to KC,MO, to find a dentist who could do the work. He told us that alot of special needs kids have teeth problems, not from lack of brushing, but genetically speaking the risk is already there. Colby's teeth, unfortunately don't look very good. But, he has a wonderful smile and he doesn't know his teeth look bad. It would be hard if the child was not mentally challenged. I wish you well.

We used to go to Springfield all the time! My dad's relatives all grew up in that part of the state. The doctor we saw, of course, retired, but they gave me the names of 2 docs that took his place. Give me a couple of days two go thru my organized files. HA HA I will find them! and e-mail back. They work out of Childrens Mercy. We've had pretty good luck with Childrens Mercy, except for their nutty billing department, but that's a whole other email! I will get back with you!

I have heard of enamel problems with mito. This is defiantly a cause for decay. Any metabolic problem causes the body to not get the proper nutrition to have strong bones and teeth. Are these still baby teeth? If so he is about the right age to loose those teeth anyway so it should not be too bad. If they are adult teeth there are many ways to replace them, in a way nobody would ever know he is missing teeth. If you would like some more info on any of this please feel free to email me off the list or on.

PS Before staying home with Grace, I worked in the dental field for many years. (Especially Oral Surgery and Cosmetic Dentistry.)

I think we're the "poster" family for teeth issues over here!!

We appear to have an enamel defect that may or may not be mito related,

but seems to go along with the connective tissue issues we have that are

thought to be mito related, if that all makes sense....LOL.

In our case, Chance at the age of 4 had to have his top 4 front teeth

pulled and root canals and crowns on all but one of his molars. The

deterioration was rapid and there never was a logical explanation anyone

could come up with at the time. His adult teeth have been coming

in and he has both thin enamel due to the genetic issue and discoloration

due to the medications he's been on, so the road looks to be long in this

respect with him. Thankfully Madison has not had the same issues

and was just seen last week by her dentist and other than the few small

cavities we've had to have filled, her teeth look great. My youngest

Abby though has followed in her brothers foot steps in a milder way.

By 4 she had 2 root canals and crowns, one molar pulled and 5 others were

filled. She too has the thin, defective looking enamel and so we

expect to be struggling with this for a while with her too.

I personally always had issues with cavities, more so than the average

person, but during my last two pregnancies there was a rapid deterioration

and after years of trying to save my teeth I finally had to have what was

left of them (they had been crumbling and breaking off at the gum line)

removed and dentures placed last summer at the age of 35.

Sincerely hoping that the work your about to have done on your son will

make a real difference for him, and hope too that since alot of kids are

losing the teeth he's having removed at this age (or younger....my 7 year

old has lost her two top front teeth and two on the bottom since December

over here) no one will pay too much attention. Good luck with everything.

Kass, Patty, and all,

Colin has 4 or 5 fillings and he will be getting his first crown in a

few weeks (he is 8). He had his first filling in a 2 year molar by the

time he was 2 1/2. It couldn't have been from hygenie--the tooth was

only erupted for 5 or 6 months. His blood calcium has been

elevated--perhaps he is pulling calcium from his teeth and bones. Has

anyone heard anything about tooth demineralization in mito? We also

have defective enamel in the family--my sister's 12 year old had many of

his permanent teeth come in with no enamel. Evan had a slew of

fillings, but things have gotten better since he started on the mito

cocktail in 2000.
