Terri, Lynne here, and yes an IVP will usually find the stone if it is there. Sorry you are having so much pain. I am being treated for an infection and I have having low right back pain and right lower quadrant pain. I also have bouts of nausea with the pain. I had the same pain awhile back but it was thought to maybe be "female" problems so they did an ultrasound but it came back negative. Did you have an IVP or an

ultrasound of the kidney. Because this is my second bought of pain in two months (but the first infection) I am wondering if maybe this is a stone. Has anyone else had this and what was your experience? Kim, I am sorry to hear you are having a bad time still. Prayers still going for you. Terri, here is an old nurse's experience. With both a kidney infection & stone, you have what's called CVA tenderness. Just a light touch on the flank, just under the ribs, will make you flinch or even jump a good ways. The pain from a stone tends to be spasm-like; grips you hard, then lets up. Kidney infection is more likely to be constant. However, you can have both a stone & an infection. In that case the pain should begin to let up after 24-48 hr. of antibiotics, longer if just given oral meds. You usually don't have fever with a stone alone, but as I said, you can have infection along with the stone, then you might have fever. Both conditions can cause blood in the urine, either visible or occult (only detected by lab stick). If you have been treated by antibiotics known to be effective against this bug (was a urine culture & sensitivity done?) for at least 48 hrs. & the pain is not improving, you need to be re-evaluated. IMHO.

Matt,

Thanks for your advice. I will have to say I have a very high pain

tolerance so it is hard to know what is bad and what is not. When I had

shingles I thought the it hurt but it didn't feel horrible so I have a

hard time knowing what is the worst pain ever. Because I am having pain

still though, I think I am going to call and talk to my doc. Maybe he

will order x-ray or MRI just to be sure since I have had the ultrasound

already.

I appreciate you guys so much, you just don't know it. My mother-in-law

is a saint but every time I see her now she says I know you are going to

wake up one day and all of these problems will be gone. Well guess

what, we should all be so lucky. She is aging and she just can't handle

seeing me sick. So, thanks for hearing me out - you guys all know what

is feels like to be chronically sick.

Rose,

A culture and sensitivity was done and I am using macrobid because it

was sensitive to it. The pain is still there; I have had it since last

Wednesday before I even new I had an infection. I had no burning, I had

just called to see if I could go back on my Detrol due to frequency,

incontinence, etc. The doctor took me off it in March. He would not

let me go back on until I had my urine tested to see if I had an

infection. I was sure I did not and thought it was ridiculous to have

to go out of my way to go and leave a specimen. Boy howdy, I had to

back pedal when they told me there was infection present.

The pain comes and goes and if you see my note to Matt, I have a hard

time quantifying pain sometimes due to a high tolerance. I may call

today or tomorrow if the pain continues. (I have been on the antibiotic

since last Thursday).

Thanks

Terri G.

Lynne,

Thanks for the answer. It was great hearing from you. How are you

doing? How are the kids? Let me know - I have been wondering where you

went.
