Hi Gwen, my name is April. I started thinking of having this surgery done

back in February. I'm almost finished with everything so I am hoping that my

date for surgery will be in July. The first thing I did was get insurance

approval, unless you can self pay there is no reason to do all the work

involved in preparing for the surgery unless you know it will be paid for.

Also, I was in clinic last week and Barbara (Dr.R's secretary) said that

Blue Cross Blue Shield was the best in paying for the surgery, so thats good

news for you. The next thing I did was talk to my husband and my family I

read the manual cover to cover three or four times. I wrote my patient

letter then got my hubbie to write the family letter, while your in the

process of all this you could go ahead and make your dr.'s appt and let

him/her know what you need from them. I think but I'm not sure you have to

have a CBC, electrolytes, and an EKG done as well as a recent physical and

pap. I have e-mailed dr. R about clarification of the tests but haven't

heard anything back yet. I still have to get my Dr.s letter but everything

else is taken care of. That's all I can think of right now, let me know if I

can help more.

See ya on the other side, (hopefully, I'm praying)

April

Gwen:

I just read in someone else's e-mail that Blue Cross/Blue Shield seems

to be one of the easiest insurance companies to get approval from. That

was my insurance company but I had the surgery in March 1999. I ended

up paying the hospital $35.00.

Sorry, I can't help with what you need to start with first. All of this

was not required when I had the procedure.

Hi, Gwen,

I guess everyone does things differently. The first thing I did was fill in

the on-line form for Dr. R. Wait...I had to get the fax# from my insurance

and also from my pcp before I could send it. Then I sent it.

I am a procrastinator, and wasn't sure if I was a candidate because my BMI

was only 36, but I had other co-morbidities. After I got the letter that

Dr. Rutledge sent to the insurance company, I then approached my doctor.

She walked out of the room and wouldn't discuss it. I had already had a

recent PAP and mammogram, so I asked for copies of the results of those, and

thanks to the MGB group, went looking for a new PCP who would accept my

request. I got a list of doctors that were in my insurance network, and

started working my way down. You have to be upfront and tell them you ARE

having weight loss surgery, and will they accept you as a patient. It took

awhile, but I ended up finding not one, but two in my area. And I live in a

very conservative republican small town.

Then I made my appointment, had my physical, bloodwork, EKG, and also a

chest x-ray because I had the remnant cough from my bout from the flu.

After that, things really started moving...all but the insurance. I had

told Barbara that I wanted a date regardless because I would be a self-pay

if the insurance said no. Well, they did...6 days before my surgery date.

I did get them to say they would pay for any complications, and I could

appeal after the fact, just so I know I have to pay the doctor and hospital

myself and if the appeal is accepted they will reimburse me. Well, I had

surgery the 24th of May and now will start the appeal process. I am still

having a hard time getting my records from my old PCP. They have an excuse

every time I call. This time the copier was broke for a week. Duh...what

about the 7 week previous that I had asked for my records.

Anyway, that's my story. I was lucky enough to have a great husband that

said we could borrow from our 401 plan for the surgery.

If you need me for a contact, please email me at

If you have a CHANCE at six months, then GRAB it! It will go fast.

Just do everything you can to prepare in the meantime and ask again.

Don't give up!!!!!!!!!!!

office last Friday. She said that Dr. R will no longer do re-do WLS. Needless

to say I was devastated and still am. I e-mailed Dr. R and he responded with

Hi Alan,

Thought I would give you some thoughts on your post-op symptoms. Considering

that you are so newly post op-I wouldn;t worry too much about the symptoms

you're describing. Any recovery involving nerves and the spinal cord is a

very slow processand nerves can trigger short term jolts of pain, numbness,

etc. in the process of healing. Even though overall there is a general

feeling of improvement shortly after surgury of most of the symptoms you had

prior to surgury, I would say that you willhave a general idea of the extent

of improvement after about 6 mo. Although it is important to do as much as

you can to slowly get back into your life activities-listen to your body and

REST when it tells you it needs to. Rest is always important to the healing

process. Hope this helps you in some way. Good luck and hang in there!

I had the exact same problem before surgery. I had surgery almost 5 months

ago and my symptoms seemed to go away after surgery for awhile. They are

just now starting to re-appear. In my case it was caused by compression of

certain nerves. (Not sure if it is the same cause this time around or not

yet.) It seemed to help last time if I changed position frequently (crossed

or uncrossed my legs, etc.) and didn't sit in one position (like the

computer) for too long at a time (no more than 20-30 minutes).

Since your surgery was so recent, maybe it is just a natural part of your

healing. I have learned that many symptoms may come and go while

recovering.

Good luck and hope you have a pain-free day.

help

Good morning everyone, I hope you are all well and relatively pain free

today. I am fairly new to this site and have posted only two previous

messages. I had decompression surgery in December 2002 and apart from severe

head and neck aches have been relatively well. However a couple of days ago

I noticed that my legs had started to ache particularly when getting up

from a sitting position or when laying down. Yesterday the little finger on

my left hand started to get a numb feeling and this morning both of my hands

ache. I am not sure if this is a sign of the dreaded Chiari returning or

not. I know that I should consult with my nsg about this but he charges

£190.00 sterling and gives about five minutes of his time: if you are lucky;

plus I cannot afford it anyway because my health insurance has expired and I

am off work at the moment.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Hope you all have a good day.

If you had decompression surgery in December 2002, you're less than two

months post-op. You're possibly less than one month post-op.

I think Chip said it best when he said that everything is normal in the

first six months post-op. Rest and take your pain pills. Call your NSG if

you are scared by a symptom. He shouldn't charge you for phone advice. Rest

and take your pills, young man. :)

In my experience this is a CSF pressure issue...... prior to my surgeries,

the mornings were the MOST difficult time, with the addition of nausea.

Haneefa, I have a question for the list. I've asked it before and this

time I'll save it for future reference: What are good sources for free or

reduced-price medicine?

A few off the top of my head are:

- Go to your local county health department and ask if there are any

subsidies available for medication

- Contact the pharmaceutical company directly to ask for special plans

they may have for free or reduced rate medicine

- See if your local pharmacy is willing to work out a payment plan for a

month or two of medication till any of the other ideas come through

- Ask your doctor if s/he has samples s/he can give you

Make sure you have copies of your income information available -

statement from unemployment bureaus, termination of insurance, etc.,

anything the companies, etc. will need as proof of your situation.

Best of luck and best wishes for future success in finding employment,

Fay

Hi Haneefa,

Does your town have a health clinic? Here in Albany we have a clinic with a

sliding scale, great doctors, and low-cost meds. They also give out lots of

samples.

There's also a prescription discount company called Merck Medco. For $25/year

they give you discounts on prescriptions. It's probably not enough discount to

make them affordable on unemployment, though.

It's really hard having thyroid problems when you have no money. My boyfriend

was disabled last Sept.--zero income--just as I was diagnosed with Graves'. He

also " falls through the cracks " in the system but was able to get help by trying

every possible agency. Maybe if you keep calling you can find some sympathetic

case worker to help you find more resources.

Best wishes,

The only free clininc is the one in the city that serves the street bumms

and I don,t qualify,,,I called providence health care they wanted money up

front, which I don,t have,

the High Risk program wants 275 a month I don,t,t have, I re- applyed

again yesterday to Oregon Health Plan have appt next tues but again the lady

told me you may not qualify!!!

I I think I need to explain something , Oregon is screwed basicaly

screwed, people are dieing here because Oregon Health plan is a failure,

life saving operations are being denied, medications are being denied, there

is a young man in one of our hospitals in a coma because Oregon Health plan

said his seizure medication was not their concern , the program is in danger

it's on over load with the amonth of migrant workers coming from mexico,,

the increase in drug addiction and alcohol addiction has they program so

full that last year they had to shut the program down, Kaiser Foundation

has shut out Oregon Health Plan patients because of serious issues with

payment and services,

I had Kaiser for almost 30 years I can not even access my own Dr cause

I have no insurance,

I have in all my adult life never seen such a sad state of affairs

as such there is in this state a legalized way to weed out the week and such

,,

I will keep plugging and trying to find a means to get my meds... even

if we have to take our unemployment check for one week and pay for a Dr!!!!!

You will be fine. Just try to get in what you can, even if it takes eating

small bites of good stuff throughout the day. I really don't think the calories

are a big thing, I think it is what we eat vitamin wise, like fresh fruit,

vegetables, meats, a well balanced amount of everything. If you have problems

you

should ask your doc about a nutritionist, they may know better than your doc

what you should have. Good luck, I think you will do great and Congratulations

Hi, I really don't know what to say but I would really think this through

before you terminate anything. I am currently 17 1/2 weeks pregnant but have

been

on the group awhile, I had a previous miscarraige in August. ANyways, I can

tell you that there are many women on the group that have gotten pregnant and

had healthy pregnancies. Were your other Bad pregnancies before WLS? You must

be smaller this time around and healthier and can probably do better with a

pregnancy this time around. It does not make you fat after WLS to have a baby

either. Mnay women on my groups that have given birth lost the weight almost

immediately and some lost more than the starting weight. You will gain some

during

pregnant but if you eat right you will not gain much at all. Alot of the

girils actually kept losing weight through the first half of pregnancy.I hope

you

really think this out before you do anything and talk to your hubby and see

what he thinks. I too suffer depression and also anxiety and still take my

klonopin and Prozac thru the pregnancy but if you are on something different

that

is not safe the docs can try something new that will work for you. Good Luck

with everything.

God Bless,

I had these feelings when I found out I was pregnant this time. We were getting

ready to adopt and my first pregnancy was the pregnancy from hell. I have had a

high risk pregnancy this time around too and way too many tests, poking, and

prodding. More people in my vagina than I care to think about!!!!

But when it came down to it I wanted this baby and am willing to go through it

one more time.

I also suffer from depression. I weaned myself off of my effexor and have been

taking lots of b vitamins to stay up.

I honestly thought I was done having kids and the doctor said I would have no

more. My son is 4 years old and this baby is due in July.

It is also hard to see my body changing after going from 350 to thin and now I

have a little bump under my breasts...but at least this time around I look

pregnant as opposed to fat.

This is really your personal decision. Just take your time because either way

once you make the decision - you can't take it back.

Big hugs to you,

Help

Hello all,

I'm new to this group since finding out I'm pregnant on Monday. I was

thrilled when I found out, but now I'm having doubts. I am now

starting to think that maybe I should terminate this pregnancy. Why?

Because I feel that I just went through something in order to gain

control over my weight and my life. Now I'm faced with a very real

chance that I will not only gain the weight back, but my body will be

even more scarred than it is already. I know it may sound selfish,

but I'm just expressing my feelings. I'm hoping that people will

sound off and allow me to get all sides. I should mention that I also

suffer from depression and all of my previous pregnancies were high

risk and not " enjoyable " experiences.

Children are a blessing, and a gift from the Lord. -Psalm 127:3
