She used Arnica, I think, and saw a trained homeopath to get a number of natural herbs and remedies. She had little swelling and generally found that her post-op experience was a good one, I think. She will probably post her own reply to you, when she has a chance. I asked my surgeon about Arnica, and he asked me not to use it, not because he knew anything bad about it, but because he did not know anything about it. I bought, but did not take, therefore, some of the tablets. There have been quite a few others here who found it helpful. I did not have a lot of swelling, and had no numbness, but I bruised mightily, which Arnica is also supposed to help prevent. What helped me, I think, was that I was religious about using first the ice packs (for the first 48 hours) and then heat, as my surgeon instructed. I did not have the upper or the chin procedures. I was splinted, and eventually did have some bands. I had no problem taking capsules and tablets after the first few days. My surgeon, though, sent me home with liquid antibiotics and pain medicine because he did not want me to swallow pills while my throat was so sore from the intubation. I used a number of homeopathic remedies pre and post-op, including Arnica Montana. All of my remedies were prescribed by a registered homeopath, which I'd recommend since they will tell you what remedy to take, when, what potency, and for how long. I've never heard of a capsule form, all of the traditional remedies I've taken are either drops or pills that are absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth (you hold them under your tongue until dissolved, or on your tongue for a certain period of time). Swallowing it doesn't have the same effect, I would assume perhaps due to the acids in the stomach. The recommendations I received was to take my homeopathic remedies on a clear palate, at least 15 minutes away from any food or drink (wait 15 min, take remedy, wait another 15 minutes). I asked my surgeon about them, he was indifferent, he'd had patients who had used homeopathics with no ill effects. People whom I spoke to who had no experience with homeopathic remedies almost all said " don't do it " . People who have had experience with alternative medicine said it would help. Homeopathic remedies are extremely diluted, so much, in fact, that a chemical analysis might not show any trace of the original source.
