Guest guest
I have a group of people who are going to take turns providing meals for me after my surgery on Thurs. My mother is coordinating. I wrote up a sheet for her to help people think of things to make, and to know what I don't like or can't handle. I'm posting my list here for two reasons: 1) if anyone wants to copy it and personalize it for their own use, that's fine, and 2) to ask those of you who have been through this already if there's anything I missed. I took out most everything that's just my taste or diatary inabilities. (I can't handle dairy, acidic foods, or seafood, but you didn't need to see all that on my list. I left in my adversion to sugar products, but if you don't agree you could take it out.) Note: I won't be wired, and not banded at first. ~~~ General instructions: all food must be blended or chopped so fine it does not have to be chewed. The way it is in the bowl is the way it gets swallowed. It does not have to be a liquid, only mashed and moist enough to slide down. Good: Protein Meat Beans Lentils (red mashes better than brown/green) Ground up nuts (peanut butter, etc.) Quinoa (it's a grain) Pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, sunflower seeds, etc. MUST be ground to a paste while the incision site is healing. Don't want that caught in the stitches. Oats Eggs Soy (milk, cheese, etc) Fruit – Everything needs to be like applesauce or a smoothie. Strawberries are bad because of the seeds. Bananas are good. Veggies – (I listed the few I don't like) Peas are good straight, but not in soup (they say it makes the soup icky when you blend it). Canned peas mush better than frozen. Carbs Potatoes! Thin with broth or gravy. Flavor is good – puree onions after sautéing them with garlic, or use a strong broth, or a good gravy (beef, chicken, mushroom or onion, but not white). Grains (rice, barley, millet, etc.) have to either be soft enough to swallow whole or be blended down with broth into a paste or thinner, at least until the incision heals. Pasta – should be small enough to swallow, like spaghettios or those little alphabet ones. Elbow macaroni is too big. Spaghetti is impossible. Bad: All milk products and all chocolate, at least for a while. They produce phlegm, and I need to keep my throat open. All refined sugar. Sugar compromises the immune system. Natural sugars are OK – honey, sorghum, pure maple syrup, etc., although I may not want sweets for a while. Anything with little seeds or hulls that might get in the incision or stuck in my braces. This might change later, as I heal. No strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc.
