Guest guest
Hi Andy! I'm sorry to hear you're still having so many problems. I can't believe that your surgeon told it was normal to have your joint pop out of place. It definitely is not normal. He sounds as bad as my first ortho who told me I was faking it so he couldn't work on my braces. At least he had an excuse - it was 1976 and not much was known about TMJ troubles then. You're right about insisting on an MRI. However, I wouldn't be surprised if your ortho won't do it. He probably doesn't order or read a lot of MRIs so he wouldn't be comfortable with interpreting the results of one. He should though be able to refer you to someone who does specialize in TMJ problems. There are a lot of treatments for TMJ problems, both surgical and nonsurgical so seeing a TMJ specialist wouldn't necessarily mean more surgery. Surgery is more of a last resort after other treatments (such as splints or physical therapy) have failed. I don't know of any specialists in your area (is it Michigan? I lived in Detroit for a few years) but if you don't get any answers from your surgeon or ortho, you may want to try to call around to dental schools. Happy Birthday in advance. I know getting some relief from your pain would be the best present. I'm hoping for some good news myself on my birthday this Friday (like finally getting these distractors out!). Good luck with your appointment and keep us updated.
