Guest guest
Clara, once upon a time that was my question too. The answer for me was that no, braces correct teeth, not the jaw. Any jaw repositioning that braces would do, would only be temporary and would need eventual surgery to correct. Some of this depends on age..I'd ask your orthodontist if you have one. Guest guest
I don't think so, Clara. Your bite can be " fixed, " more or less, but generally not enough, if your jaws are mismatched, or out of alignment side to side. That's why I relapsed, my surgeon thought -- because my childhood ortho didn't know (nor did anybody else) the importance of getting a balance between the jaws. Guest guest
Clara, I agree, in part, with what Alix says. However, it really depends on how much movement/correction is needed. My braces repositioned my teeth so much so that when it came time for the surgery, I didn't need much movement of the jaws at all. My ortho had actually given me the option of correcting my jaw with or without surgery. He'd told me if I absolutely did not want the surgery, he could " probably " do it with braces only, that the plan of treatment would be different. However, I had other problems...my TMJ was so far advanced that I didn't want to take a chance on the braces alone not working and then having to start all over to prepare for and then have surgery. I just wanted to get it over with and, hopefully, get it right the first time...so far, so good. Talk to your Ortho and see what he/she has to say about it. Good luck, Smooches braces help ? hey . can i ask if by putting only braces , will your jaws be repositioned ? because surgery is too risky and scary for me . thank you . clara Join the Yahoo!
