Re: Removal of Surgical Hooks

Hi Greta,

Those kind of surgical hooks are removed by your ortho when he/she

replaces your surgical archwires. The surgical archwires are a

heavier-than the normal archwires that are put in place to keep

things stable up to the surgery. After surgery, once your ortho

decides to start fine-tuning, he/she won't need those heavy surgical

archwires and that's when they'll come off. I saw my ortho 8 weeks

post-op, he would not see me any sooner (except I saw him the day I

was released from hospital as my rubber bands broke and he was

closer).

Hope that helps,

As is soo often the case with these things, there can be different

answers.

My surgeon had me see my ortho within 24 hours of removing the

splint, " So he can get those big wires out of there right away. "

I saw the ortho, and he segmented the surgical wire, leaving parts of

it in and leaving some of the back brackets naked, so he could band

directly around the brackets. I didn't think much of that, but it

surely worked.

He did take out the big, looping " hooks " my surgeon had fashioned out

of braided wire, and replaced them with smaller hooks to hold more

elastics.

But my surgical wires stayed in until the bitter end -- at least the

part of them that wasn't cut out.
