Hi Andy,

I echo 's excellent advice. Don't dismiss yoga out of hand as

being too " new ageish " . It has been proven to be wonderfully

therapeutic for bad backs. Also, it has been shown that

strengthening the abdominal muscles can alleviate some types of back

pain, as can stretching the hamstrings.

You might also want to try some kind of stress relief, be it

meditation, counseling, biofeedback, etc.

I'd be careful with the drugs. Some of the worst addicts I know

began with taking just a little something for a backache. I'm not

trivializing your pain, just trying to find some ways around it.

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for the backup. If riding a bike would have helped, I'd have

done that too :>

What made it frustrating for me is that all I wanted to do was lie

down, but that prone position just seemed to make it worse. I

definitely tried to avoid drugs, I really wanted to know where the

pain was and try to find an alternate solution. Still have that

acupuncturist's card in my wallet (and I found out he's right in the

same building as my surgeon).
