Guest guest
Hi Cindy, I've just joined the board a couple of months ago, and I was just curious about your tmj's. Did you have problems with your joints before the surgery already? Did it get better or worse because of the surgery? and exactly what kind of surgeries did you have (did your lower jaw have to be move forward, your upper segmented lefort?) Sorry about all the questions, just trying to find out more about tmj's and the effect of surgeries on them. My one joint is a little weaker than the other and I'm really concerned that a surgery might make it worse. I'm going to get a SARPE and a lower advancement (at least that's the plan up until now) Nathalie > Hi all you " old " timers! I see Irish, Cammie and Cheryl are still on > board. Guest guest
Hi Cindy. I've been wondering how things were going. What is your doctor's plan for treating your TMJ or do you know? How long will they be trying the splint treatment? I'm glad that at least it is helping your pain. I had my surgery 5 weeks ago, and still kind of recovering, but doing ok. > Hi all you " old " timers! I see Irish, Cammie and Cheryl are still on > board. Report: The bite is still dead on. Guest guest
I had TMJ surgery in July '02, then BSSO/lower adv. in Feb. '03. My TMJ problem is SO MUCH better now. I do have some pain (mostly in bad weather), but the original type of pain isn't there any more. I had all the cartilage removed from my left TMJ, as well has had the temporal muscle grafted into the joint. Due to the loss of bone and joint damage, my bite was way off, so I had to have the BSSO/lower adv. It's amazing how well everything turned out. I got my braces off last month. I saw my before pictures and I couldn't believe how bad everything looked. Ask any questions and I'll be more than happy to answer them. Regards, Jane > > Hi all you " old " timers! Guest guest
> Hi all you " old " timers! I see Irish, Cammie and Cheryl are still on > board. Hiya Cindy, Thanks for the update. I guess you got kind of a mixed bag of results there. I'm glad for the good things and sorry for the not-so- good. I still have to baby my TM joints, too. Bagels, steak and chewing gum are still big no-no's for me. Other than that I'm doing well. Definitely far better off than I was pre-op. It's good to hear from you. Take care of yourself, Cheryl
Guest guest
Cindy -- let's not talk about weight. It's about all of that, I think, and the fact that your eating habits were disturbed -- by the splint, if nothing else! But how great that the bite is where it needs to be! Sorry you're still having tmj troubles, but that's another indication that this surgery doesn't necessarily cure everything, much as we all wish it would. My funny story to compliment yours: When I went to my general dentist for the first or second time out of appliances, he had a new assistant. She looked in my mouth, then said to him, " My goodness, her teeth are so straight. She must have worn braces. " The dentist and I looked at each other and couldn't help giggling. He said, " Yep. Twice. She got the last ones off in October. " Still, it made me feel good. Turns out surgery has also been recommended for the assistant's son, so she immediately got VERY interested. Cammie > Hi all you " old " timers! I see Irish, Cammie and Cheryl are still on > board. Report: The bite is still dead on. The surgeon and the > orthodontist are pleased. Guest guest
Hi Cindy! It's so nice to see you here again! As you may remember, I too was a January 2003 surgery buddy of yours! My anniversary will be 1/31 and I simply can't believe how time has flown ... I'm glad to hear your bite is stable but sorry about the TMJ's. That's disappointing a year out of this whole thing. As for me, so you can compare with someone who went in the same time as you, my bite remains stable. No pain. The midline is staying put. I go to see the ortho every 5 months or so for a retainer tweaking. The only lingering effect of the surgery for me is numbness. I have to admit that I am more numb than I had hoped at 1 year postop. But also after having 2 surgeries, I increased my risk of lingering numbness. As I've mentioned here recently, I have no regrets and am still very glad I did the surgery. However, the numbness can be annoying. The middle of my chin is numb which I can deal with. But my bottom lip is pretty much numb. I get the old " altered sensation " if I run my finger along my bottom lip, yet oddly, if I bite straight down on my bottom lip, I don't feel a thing. I still get tinglies weekly in the lip and chin area so I'm still confident for more feeling. My dentist who had lower done is 5 years postop and told me it took him well beyond 1 year to get all of his feeling back, so I'm hopeful. Thanks for checking in and good luck with the TMJ's. We've come a long way, huh? 1 whole year! Irish! > Hi all you " old " timers! I see Irish, Cammie and Cheryl are still on > board. Report: The bite is still dead on. Guest guest
Hi Jane, Did you have any other associated problems, i.e. nerve damage? Do you have any numbness in your lip and chin, as in most cases? Thanks, Virginia > > > Hi all you " old " timers! I see Irish, Cammie and Cheryl are still > > on > > > board.
