Guest guest
Hi Sharon Im post op 4 months from top and lower jaw. Have regained all feeling except for my lower lip and chin, have sort of resigned myself it may not come back but my ortho says its still early days so we shall see. I have decided if it does not come back it is going to be better now with numbness instead of an underbite I have been aware of since I can remember and I still wish I had surgery years ago instead of being scared of pain which in the event never happened. Sorry if this may not be what you want to hear but it depends how badly you want something and you need to go into it with eyes open and knowledge of what can happen. I found reading too much didnt help and actually only joined this site after op and only read about the op after I had signed consent forms, I found too much knowledge not a good thing as the op details are not good reading. Good luck Sharron (aged 34) > Hello, > I'm new here. I'm just beginning this process. I'm 32. I went to the > ortho and he suggested jaw surgery to fix my 9 mm overbite. Guest guest
Yes, some have more or less permanent numbness. I had lower advancement, by 5 mm and to the side by 3, and never had any numbness. There are, however, no guarantees, so think long and hard. I'd say, just offhand, that most people do have some numbness at least for a time, judging by what's been reported here. I'd also say that there are functional risks if you don't have the surgery, though. For me, I was in danger of losing my teeth, and I was getting TMJD. (Sometimes the surgery helps the latter and sometimes it makes it worse. For me, surgery helped.) I was 56 when I had the surgery, in June 2002. Cammie > Hello, > I'm new here. Guest guest
Hi Sharron: I read your reply about numbness. I am also right at 4 months and also have numbness in lower lip and chin. Actually, the feeling is somewhat all back, but it still feels numb or what I have heard of as altered. I was curious if yours is like this? Seems like I got feeling back after two months, but it's not normal. That's also when the tingles stopped. Well, I've heard it can take up to a year or more and we are still early, so there is hope. Are you bothered by your speech with the numbness? Seems like certain words are difficult and I was wondering if it because of the lower lip. I wish you the best of luck.
