Hello Fran,

You might want to go back through the posts and read some on pre and

post-op advice.

Do you know if you will be banded or wired shut?? That will make a

big difference in how you recover---at least I feel especially in the

mental area. Banded gives a lot more freedom as to what you can put

in your mouth obviously. Soft and mushy as opposed to liquid only.

I was wired shut, I sure did miss my tongue for those 5 weeks.

The nasal congestion post-op was one of the worst things to me. A

bedside humidifier helps a lot.

Good Luck, keep us posted,

a

If you will check out this site

You will find that Fiddlesticks has put together a well

organized font of info.

Good luck!

That is so true about mothers!

Well unless you HAVE to have her take care of you post op choose

someone else or you could have two patients...

I think visitors depends on who and how long. I had a few but they

were mostly the can talk by themselves type :) as you will be woman

of few words...woman of few drooling words.

Mind you my friend broke his engagment on day 4 (bad sticky

situation) so I could talk enough to say don't ever take her back

and make the convincing argument, mind you my inlaws showed up that

day with my SIL and her looser boyfriend and I am still pissed over

that!

But do warn people, most people were so nice by not reacting in

sheer horror at me post op. I am not sure I could hold a face that

well...

Hi Fran-

I too had a surgical expansion, which did not go bad at all. I'm

actually scheduled for surgery on March 8th, but insurance denied me.

They said they don't over dental surgery...well, I think most would

agree this is no cavity filling or root canal we're having...all

medical! I'm working on the appeal right now, which I hope should be

no problem. I'm just curious as to how your insurance claims worked

out and what the timing was, did they approve both surgeries back in

2002? Did you submit separately? Any info you can provide would be

great.

Thanks, michael

I'm not Fran. But you, or better yet, your surgeon, should make the

point to them, as forcefully as possible, that this is NOT dental

surgery, but rather a MEDICAL procedure, made necessary by a

congenital skeletal deformity, namely dysplasia of whichever or both

jawbones, the maxilla and/or the mandible. They also need to be made

aware that it is not cosmetic surgery, not TMJ surgery etc.

Molds, models, pictures, drawings, tracings, x-rays, etc. should

accompany the submission, and you should request a review by a panel

of maxillofacial and oral surgeons. If all that doesn't do it, keep

on appealing, and if need be, go to your state insurance commission.

Thanks Shiloh. I was actually working on having my aunt come in just

to distract my mother! The hospital will be mom only and the night

before the surgery, I'm going to show her some of the pix that people

bravely posted here so that she's prepared. Personally, it helped me

a great deal. I started 10 days post-op and working my way up to

hospital shots and realized the images in my imagination were far

worse!

I'm thinking of waiting 4-5 days before anyone coming to my house?

Thanks again.
