Guest guest
I had lower and genio performed on me Feb, 2 so, I can't answer your question about pain for the upper portion, but I can tell you that I had no pain at all after my surgery. My swelling went down pretty fast after day 3. I had no problem maintaining my weight afterwards, but I was not wired shut either. The most painful part of being in the hospital was when the nurse removed the tape holding my IV needle in place (no kidding). Relax...you will be just fine! > I am schedule for surgery later this month and I concerned about the > amount of pain that I will be in afterwards. Guest guest
Hello! I had " the works " over 1 year ago. The pain was not as bad as anticipated. You'll be surprised after such a complicated surgery that the pain is secondary compared to other discomforts. The swelling was more distracting than the actual pain. As far as pain, I was never prescribed anything other than Motrin, which worked enough to keep the pain at bay. I can't say I was pain-free, but it was certainly tolerable. The swelling gradually reduced after Day 4 postop. By the end of the second week, I'd say 80% of my swelling was gone and anything left was only noticeable to me or my surgeon. That's about when I started venturing out, although I think I was ready about Day 10 postop to get out of the house. For me, regardless of whether I was on liquids only or then the mushies only, all eating was exhausting for me as my jaws had to learn to chew again, so that was why it was challenging to keep weight on in the early days. It wasn't the liquids, it was just so much work to a lot down at one sitting. You will be surprised how tired you get trying to just drink. But then it becomes second nature and those pounds magically find their way back onto your hips (or whereever)! Hang in there and good luck on your upcoming surgery. Guest guest
Hi, J. I had upper/lower/genio on March 2nd, and I haven't had much pain at all. I was given a prescrition for Tylenol with codine (or something like it) but I was afraid of getting nauseated, so I didn't fill it. I've been just fine with Tylenol and Motrin. I don't take them around the clock, just when I feel a little uncomfortable. I tend to take Mortin in the evening to help with swelling. As far as my weight, I haven't had a problem. Now, I'm only on day 6, but I haven't noticed much change in my weight. I was on liquids for 48 hours after surgery, and I wasn't hungry. I might have lost a few pounds then, but I'm not sure. Then I moved to meal replacement shakes and soup, still forcing myself to eat. On day 4, I think I got my appetite back, and now, I can't seem to get enought meat! :-) And I rarely ate meat before--especially red meat! I've had meatloaf with gravy, meatballs with spaghetti sauce, brocolli and lentil and beef barley soup, tomato soup, pancakes with syrup, cream of wheat, and peanut butter and jelly! I seem to want something different each meal, and so far, I've been pretty pleased with the taste! I think it's important to eat a lot of protein and good carbohydrates (grains, brown rice, barley, etc) and to eat often. As far as the swelling, I think a few weeks. It peaked on day 3, and is going down ever so gradually. But it would be better to hear from some more advanced vets than me! :-) Best of luck on your surgery.
