Guest guest
Hi Kate Im not sure but I thought Id reply anyway. Im 20 and Im having my braces and op on the NHS. I cant see any reason why you couldnt. Especially when its a mechanical problem like an overbite, as opposed to something completely cosmetic. I hope someone has a more specific answer for you! > > Hi > > Im just wondering if anyone can tell me please whether surgery for an > overbite would be free in the UK on the NHS when you're over 18. > > If not can anyway tell me roughly how much it might cost? > > Thanks > > Kate

Guest guest
Hi Kate Thought I'd add my pennyworth. At the grand old age of 44 I'm having the surgery done on the NHS. It didn't seem to be a problem although my ortho did say recently they are a lot more choosy whom they will now accept - I don't know on what criteria. I originally had a private consultation for the surgery at which he said the op would cost around £4,000 - that was for lower only. I'm now having upper as well so I presume that might well double the cost? My braces however are private - I don't think you can get those on the NHS over 18 (maybe in exceptional cases) - they have cost £2,500. Best wishes Sue (UK)
Guest guest
Hi, I'm 30 years old and i got both my operation and braces free on the NHS, (The NHS is not exactly free when we pay monthly national insurance contributions from the moment we start to work!) I was referred by my dentist to an orthodontic, who then referred me for this surgery. Its not easy to get this operation, I had to wait a long time (3 years) and the surgeon was not keen to operate, although now he is so proud of his work! Good luck whatever your decision is.
