Guest guest
Christy, I had my BSSO on Feb 2nd. For me, the swelling peaked on day 3. After that, the swelling subsided quite rapidly. As far as pain after the surgery…I had very little and only requested one shot for the pain (mainly so I could sleep a full night). I'm willing to bet that he'll do just fine after the surgery. The swelling will probably not be so great that it will scare your baby. But if you are concerned I would suggest that you just monitor the swelling and when you feel comfortable, let the baby see daddy. If you have any more specific questions…don't hesitate to ask. There are a lot of very informative people in this group who enjoy answering your questions.

Guest guest
Hi, Christy. If your husband is just having his lower jaw done, I don't think he will have to worry about the baby not recognizing him. I think the biggest changes in appearance come from people who have their upper jaws moved (or both upper and lower). Also, how much movement they will be having done. Your husband's lips will probably be swollen, but that goes away after a few days. I had upper, lower and genio (chin) done almost 4 weeks ago, and my kids (2 and 4) didn't have any problem recognizing me. I told them I would be swollen like a blowfish, and we had fun pretending to be swollen (this wouldn't really work for a 6 month old, though). They were surprised at how big my lips were, but I drew a funny cartoon of myself with huge lips, and they laughed and then they were fine. Do you think your daughter would understand " Daddy has a boo-boo " ? Maybe that would help her to understand that this swolen man is, in fact, Daddy. I wasn't in much pain at all--nothing that Tylenol or Motrin couldn't handle--and I suspect the same for your husband. You can ask your surgeon about eating--every doctor is a little different in how they do things. Some people are allowed to eat soft foods right away, some are on a liquid diet for 6 weeks. (I'm on week 3 1/2 of the 6-week liquid diet, which isn't bad at all--I'm eating very well.) This is a wonderfula place for asking questions and getting support, so I'm glad you've found us.
