Hello everyone, my names Dan and im going to be 17 on January 7th.

I got my upper jaw surgury done on Monday, at about 1pm. The surgury

lasted an hour and a half or so. I'm scheduled to go back to work

and school at 2 weeks post op. I've been reading alot through the 2

groups I found on jaw surgury... and I frankley don't think I should

have. I don't recall hearing that the numbness in my upper lip may

not come back for MONTHS. I'm really geting worried. I don't recall

my doctor saying that the recovery period would be that long. It's

quite depressing. I'm all right though, today some of my swelling

went down and new swelling came. I can't feel much around my

lip/nose area, but my bottem jaw is find and stuff. My upper lip

usually gets jolts of movement everyonce in a while, is this the

numbness starting to wear off? With only upper surgury, how long do

you guys think it'll be till my swelling is mostly gone? I really

appriciate your guys's input, im allways online reading... I probebly

will be untill im fully recovered.

Congrats on getting to the other side : )

Sensation usually returns over time. You won't go to bed one night

and wake up the next morning suddenly able to feel things again.

It's a long process that can take months, but you won't be without

any feeling for months. I'm nine months post-op from upper and lower

and my top front four teeth still feel weird, but I'd rather have

weird feeling than no feeling. My doc says it may still return to

normal. Don't let the numbness worry you too much. Think of it as a

good thing because it keeps you from feeling the bad stuff too.

The jolts of movement sound like a sign that your sensation is coming

back in your upper lip.

Visible swelling will probably be gone by 4 to 6 weeks after surgery,

though you may have some internal swelling you can feel but others

can't see for many months.

You'll have ups and downs, but remember that the hardest part is now

behind you.

Hi Dan.

First, about that depression. That's a frequent feeling post op. Some

of it, at least, is biochemical and comes from the steroids they gave

you during surgery to help keep the swelling down. It will pass; just

try to relax about it.

Hey, if you can't go back to school and work, you can't. Just be sure

someone there knows the why of it, and see what you, or your parents,

can do to get an extension of the time.

Those jolts of movement probably mean that your nerves are beginning

their recovery. But how long is just unpredictable.

Sorry. I know it's frustrating.

You are young, and presumably strong and in good health, which bodes

well for you!
