Guest guest
Well im having surgery a week from tomorrow for an 8mm overbite and I am already getting extremely nervous just thinking about it. I know having this surgery is for the better but I am mostly scared about the pain. I had issues with the pain from my wisdom teeth surgery so I am worried that this is going to be a really bad experience. The main reason I am having this surgery is one, my parents are making me, and two I really want to get my braces off before my high school graduation. I am just curious as to the pain of just a lower jaw surgery and any words of encouragement would be appreciated. Thanks, Brittany
Guest guest
Hi Brittany - I had a lot of pain after my wisdom teeth extractions - and TRUST ME - the pain from surgery is nothing compared to that. Seriously - I had little to no serious pain - just a headache here and there - after my surgery. Granted, everyone is different - but mostly - the pain isn't awful. One of the things I noticed befiore surgery is how little you read on this site about serious pain. It does happen - but I don't read a lot of posts talking about pain here. Two weeks ago - the orthodontist put in my first new wires since surgery.. and OW!! Does that hurt! My surgeon was so proud of himself - he said - see your orthodontist hurts you more than I do!!! And remember - you always have us! You'll find people on this site are very understanding and helpful. Guest guest
Me, too, brittany. I had lower only, and had no pain to speak of. At least no pain the drugs didn't dismiss. I am hoping that you will be the same. I do not like the thought that " my parents are making me. " I do think you can get through it pretty easily -- at least I hope it will be as easy for you as it was for me. Taking out the wizzies was a lot worse for me, in terms of pain. Of course, I got a dry socket, and you htg do not want that. Jaw surgery on lower only was a walk in the park by comparison. Honest. If I can help, holler, and I will. Best, Cammie > > Well im having surgery a week from tomorrow for an 8mm overbite > and I > > am already getting extremely nervous just thinking about it. Guest guest
brittany, i'm over a week post-op and i'm doing just fine!!! no pain right now at all! i had upper and lower jaw surgery. i will say that everyone reacts to surgery differently so its really hard to say what kind of experience you will have. but let me encourage you... i did have some pain. there were moments when i just sat and cried it hurt so bad. i'm not saying that to scare you, but to encourage you... i got through it!!! i'm okay! a really good thing for the pain is to apply heat to the area. here's what you do: get a sock (one that is preferably in good condition), fill it with rice and tie it off. then heat it up for no more than 1 minute and 30 seconds. it is the best thing ever! i've carried my sock with me everywhere i go! plus, your doctor will prescribe pain medication, which will probably also help you to sleep. don't worry! i was scared going into this surgery, and now i'm on the other side of it! you will be fine... i promise! take care, heather > Well im having surgery a week from tomorrow for an 8mm overbite and I > am already getting extremely nervous just thinking about it.
