Guest guest
Hi, I've had my 3 wisdom teeth extracted exactly one week ago. Two upper were easy, the lower was impacted, they had to drill to get it out. I thought everything was fine, but after a few days I got this sharp pain next to my ear. Sometimes it's really almost unbearable, sometimes I hardly feel it. At night, I usually feel it more. I went to my dentist to get the stitches out today and asked him if I might have 'dry sockets' (I'd been doing some research) but he said it didn't look like it and told me basically not to worry, the pain will go away, it's too soon to think the worst. Also, I've not been able to open my mouth the way I did before (one finger less, before I could open 3 fingers). I had told him that one of my joints is slightly smaller than the other, but like I said, he thinks I worry to much and I have to give it time to heal. I would probably not think the worst, but I know about all those joint problems people have by reading the board. I'm really afraid he messed up (put to much pressure on my jaw when he extracted it?). Is it normal to feel this pain near your ear after a (wisdom) teeth extraction? And to not be able to open your mouth completely after one week? Nathalie
Guest guest
I don't want to scare you but I want to share my story with you. I had a wisdom tooth extraction (lower) 8 months ago today. After a few days of excruciating pain, radiating from my jaw to my ear I went back to my dentist. He told me I was healing slow and not to worry, sent me on my way with 10 vicodin. Two more trips to him and he gave me the same speech, healing slow, here's some vicodin, etc. He never even took an x ray. After 3 weeks of pain that was preventing me from functioning on a daily basis I finally was treated by an oral surgeon who diagnosed a fractured jaw. It was 8 months ago today and I am sitting here with my jaw wired shut 2 weeks after being rushed into emergency surgery with yet another flare up of an infection in my jaw bone. I have had 3 surgeries in the last 8 months, I have been in and out of the hospital on a regular basis being treated for the infection (IV antibiotics) and I have also suffered permanent nerve damage. If you feel there is something more going on than normal recovery there probably is. Call your Dr. again and insist on a full pan x -ray, and if he dismisses your concerns, find another oral surgeon who won't! Good luck and let me know what happens! Guest guest
Hi Linette, Thanks for your reply. I remember reading your post a while back on what happened to you, I couldn't believe it! I really hope you're feeling better now, and that you'll be out of the wires soon. There have been some posts about sueing your surgeon, well I think you'd have a really good case against your dentist! It's one of the most frustrating things though, that your dentist (or anyone for that matter) doesn't take you seriously when you're in pain ... I don't think that my jaw is broken because the pain comes and goes. Right now it feels a lot better actually; just a soft dull throbbing, I just can't open my mouth wide yet. I did make an appointment with my doctor to get those x-rays your were talking about! I really hope nothing happened with my joint...I have a SARPE coming up in March and 10 months after that lower advancement, so I know I'm going to be totally 3rd degreeing my surgeon on the effects of the surgery on my (weaker) joint...
